Can someone explain this to me? Thanks.
Check out Zexel-Torsen's website. You'll find excellent articles describing the differences btween their helical [torque sensing] and clutch [speed sensing] limited-slip differential.
Also look here: http://www.houseofthud.com/differentials.htm

great question static. wondering the same myself.
Static, are you considering getting the one that David Draper is offering, or the one you can get from www.quaifeamerica.com
?????
with quaife's history, i'm really leaning their way.

Thanks Chui..
Yeah, I'm considering getting one for sure.. just not sure from whom!! But the more power mods I put on the car.. the more it becomes apparent that I need one!

So we've got the following options:
1.Quaife LSD $795.00 --I am personally leaning this way
2WCToyota david draper says he's got a new clutch type LSD
3Phantom Grip : BillyBrun is runnin this.... Heard some bad things about them however, $299
4. Sport Compact car listed another that started with a K, but I can't remember and when I went to their website they didn't even mention the Celica.
I guess I would definitely run out and grab one of these, I'm just questioning the whole install. I heard install quotes at 1000 bux for this. I don't even wanna try to afford that. 1000 bux can go to something else, I think I will give the install a shot. My dad is an awesome hack mechanic.

WAAAyyyy back when billybrun first posted his times there was of course the immediate uproar from everybody about the phantom grip. A couple of honda guys came on and criticized it heavily saying that's why they call it the no grip phantom grip....
Of course the thread is long long gone..
What clutch/flywheel combo are you going with?
That Blitz flywheel/clutch combo that bottle posted a long time ago looked intriguing, however when I hit bottle's website their is no mention of it at all.

Interesting...
I was still leaning towards the Act clutch/Toms fly wheel combo.. and the TRD Helical LSD.. but I don't know if thats available anymore.
What is so good about Quaife?

I dunno, I haven't heard anything bad and when I mention it to other people they go "oh that's a good thing"...........
Right now they have it for $795 ....... not bad, and it's not a clutch type... .although I'm not really sure what kind it is.
http://www.quaifeamerica.com/differentials/diffs.htm
quote from their website : "Every Quaife ATB Differential comes with something else other's don't have:
a Limited Lifetime Warranty. This warranty applies even when raced"

Wow, that sounds good... I like that warrantly too... It says something about it being "gear operated"... is that Helical, or another type? Anyone know?

Also, since you may or may not be aware.
Bottle apparently attempted to buy about 10 of these from this company to start a group buy. They flat turned him down. So right now might be the best time to pounce on a deal like this.

There is no way I'm going to do it myself.. I have a hard enough time getting an intake in.. its just too damn hard without a lift. I have no idea how much it will cost.. but I'm guestimating at least 600 bucks.. if not more..

I have the ACT clutch, Fidanza flywheel, and Quiafe ATB sitting in my garage awaiting install. I had to go out yesterday and spend another $130 at Toyota for the input and output bearing, 2 oil seals and 3 gaskets for this install. Oh don't forget the 3 quarts of MT-90 $26. Total part cost for this upgade is close to $1650 and I estimate the labor is going to be another $800. The guy doing the install is first rate so I have no problem paying a little more.
The Quaife uses helical gears so it is similar in design as the TRD helical. But I suspect the Quaife is probably better built given the warranty and experience of the company. The last word from David draper is no more TRD helical and he was hoping to find their source so he could buy from them directly.
A clutch type LSD should be used only for racing or someone who likes to rip their car apart as it requires periodic adjustment.
If you want to see how difficult this job would be to do go look at the transmission section in the TSB and manual catagory of neewcelica.org forum.

Bumping this back up to the top, lets see if anyone is actually alive in Technical Discussion.
I would really like to put an LSD in my car. Just wondering if anyone else is interested in this, and if you have an LSD in your car, COULD YOU PLEASE POST and let us know how it's helping you?!

I'd love to learn more about the differences in the two LSDs. Guess I'll have to hit those sites.
As for the install....I think someone would be crazy NOT to go for the whole shabang when that tranny is cracked open....clutch/FW/LSD/kitchen sink
Keep us up to date guys.
