I installed my CAI around 3 weeks ago, but didn't get the heat shield, splash guard, whatever you call it. I heard that it's possible for the car to hydrolock. Just wondering how would i know if my car hydrolocks. And if i do get the heat shield, can i install it without taking off the whole bumper? Thanks in advance

if your car hydrolocks it wont run.. hyrdolocking means your car ingests water through the intake and then locks up due to the fact that it cannot compress water. unless you live in a really wet area or in an area where roads are poorly drained i wouldnt worry about it. i had an iceman on my neon that sat about 9-10" off the ground next to the drivers side wheel and i went through puddles 5-6" deep many times without any problems.

Well, as you can see i live in virginia, and i'm about to lower my car with TRD Springs. Is that gonna affect it, or have a better chance of hydrolocking?

dude....u are in Falls Church.......that says it all, NO you will not hydrolock your engine, unless you wanna go diving with your car and wanna cross creeks then NO. n e ways just be careful with puddles, that's what I do, before I just use to hit the puddled water but now I just stay away, but you will not hydrolock it.

In order for that to happen, the intake MUST be completely SUBMERGED in water enough time for the engine to suck up water, a splash will not do that effect.

BTW, have you heard of DCM7thGEN?

if you go barelling into a big puddle, you might ingest water, but not hydrolock the engine. that happened to me.

in which case you just have to take the intake off, clean everything, pull the plugs, crank the engine a bit, maybe use some carb cleaner down there, flush the engine and tranny, etc. my mechanic did all that in about an hour and the car was running fine afterwards. you'd also need a mechanic i think, cuz the car will throw a CEL cuz of misfiring.

I barreled into a LARGE puddle that was hidden around a blind corner. I had a stock airbox, no CAI. The front of my car was submerged upto the Toyota emblem in the front. I heard a loud thunk and boom the car would not run. The Airbox was never submerged but the splash from hitting the puddle( I was traveling 30 mph) was enough to hydrolock it.

My insurance company paid to install a brand new engine. I had to wait 6 weeks for one to be shipped in from Japan.

thing is the stock filter sits in what amounts to a bucket. I have hot numerous decent puddles at night with an Injen and no problem. Short of Larry's escapade (sorry dude), I don;t see how you will have a problem.

I'm planning on getting and Injen CAI too. I was just wondering how many of you are still experiencing CEL's. And would it be okay for me to run over 1" puddles?

Hilfiger, try 5" puddles and no problems. Seriously, I was so worried about it at first, but never a problem, knock on wood.

Hold on... I need to comment on what zMaN said. You hit a puddle (or should I say river) that came up to your Toyota emblem going 30MPH. OUCH!!!

Yeah, came upon it around a blind corner. I was going 30 before I hit it. I hit the brakes but I didn't have much time to slow down before I went in. I am not sure how fast I was going when I hit. My front Licence plate was bent up from the bottom and was pointing straight ahead.

Oh, the water reached the emblem but the Puddle/River was deeper. I was lucky I stopped when I did or my interior would have gotten flooded. Heaviest rain I have been in for a long time.
