View Full Version : Bye GT-S, Hello RX-8

Well, I said good-bye to my 2000 GT-S and just got an RX-8: silver, black leather, 6speed (of course) Gt pgk, appearance package and Nav system, I have to wait 600 miles before I can get on it, although when I took one for a test drive the salesman requested I shift at 9000 rpms (which I readily obliged), no 6k rush, but it just pulls up to 9k (and it gets there fast). I want to say thanks to everyone that contributed on this board, I found it extremely helpful. I also would like to thank Larry for starting and keeping this board as one of the best forms ever. I will still check this board everyday as I have doen for the past 4 years. As soon as I can really get on it, I'll let you all know my opinons on the 8.
Nice trade off man, I saw a gun metal (stock grey) rx-8 on the road and I was in awe of its beautiful body.
Enjoy the new ride!

higher cost and the same power of a gts and is heavier.
hopefully they have some upgrades that will help. i like the car but i cant get passed the fact it makes 175 hp at the wheels and gets horrible gas mileage.

many would deem ur veilside kit a waste of money.
why pay to make ur car slower?
(even tho i like body kits... this just goes to show u.... to each their own)
the starting price on an rx8 is around 28 give or take a few grand for the base model. there have been some cars dynoing in the mid 180's....
IMO i would have gotten something else, but its a nice car nonetheless... congrats.
Nice this with that car is that I easily fit in the back seats (5'10" 205 lbs). RWD isn't a bad thing either. :)

wasn't there a recall on all the rx-8? i read somewhere that they over-rated their hp. they never hit or came close to their advertised hp. buyers had an option to either return their vehicle at a full refund or reveive full service for a year. i don't remember full details, but congratz! pix of the car looks much better than in person imo, but to each to his own. hope you enjoy it

Thanks to some of you, as for the others let me say this:
First there is more to a car than pure speed, and my seat of the pants indicates the RX-8 is faster then a stock GT-S, Second the HP issue is not a big deal, on the RX-8 forum they have gotten 196 rwhp - it appears the RX-8 goes into a 'safe mode' when on the dyno. Third, there is absolutely no comparison as to the details and quality of the interior, not to mention the space. My RX-8 sticker was 34,000.00.
To see some photos (I did this quick) go to:

My ID is 6speed8 on the RX-8 site

I stand behind my statement. I think the GTS is a POS, and the same with the RX8. In the RX8's case, it has the unfortunate position of being upwards of 10K more expensive for about the same level of performance as a GTS.

True..for $35k he could have gotten a myriad of the newest import/domestic performers like:
1. 03 Cobra
2. 350z
3. EVO
4. STi
5. GTO
(thats not a ranking, but a list)
at the end of the day though, he's getting a nicer car thats RWD, will have an aftermarket and a serious following, can handle extremely well, and is decent looking. This car performance wise reminds me of a S2000 with a hardtop and interior space.

its around 28k base.
he bought the navi and the aero package and leather...
basically... fully loaded...
a g35c fully loaded is just about 40k
just as long as ur happy, that's all that matters. Just like you said, speed is not really a factor and you probably don't race at all. Congrats on the car

Well, I need a 4 seater and most 4 seat cars would take up too much space in my garage. The '8' is only 174 inches long. I also wanted a balanced car, like the GT-S was. The WRX, EVO and the Mazdaspeed Protege were on my list, but none come with leather and I have to have leather. I wanted a car with good headlights, and the '8' has the same light pattern as the GT-S, plus the're xenon - really bright. I like the look of 5 spoke wjheels, and the '8' has 18x8 inchers with pressure monitors. I like the dual exhaust - it balances out the back. I could go on and on, but I have a stack of magazines and a list of URLs that I have been using for research for the past 6 months. Yes the RX-8 is not perfect (no car is), but it has everything I need and want.
FYI - The RX-8 interior is very very nice, quality materials, enough mix of textures and shades so as not to be boring and little details too numerous to mention. Go check one out especially at night, you'll see what I'm talking about.
I was seriously considering another Celica, but Toyota convinced me otherwise: My moonroof tint started peeling at 62k miles and I asked Toyota to fix it at their cost since it is a known problem, but they said it was out of warranty and basically told me to have a nice day. After the idler pulley that was replaced once and now making noise again, the 6 speed had been replaced and was starting to grind on all gears - it just became clear - bye bye Toyota.

good luck with a new car! we all have our reasons which is why world is such a beautiful place, but dont expect rx8 to be more reliable than your GTS...

Yeah, I do have some concerns as far as the engine is concerned, but that's it. The transmission is an absolute delight, the GT-S tranny feels crude, by comparison. I have owned 4 Mazda cars before I got the GT-S and the GT-S spent more time at the dealer for repairs, than all 4 Mazdas combined. I never misshifted the GT-S, never had the lift bolt problem and never broke a rod on it either, so perhaps I am just kind of lucky, we'll see.
I loved my GT-S and it was time for something new, and I realized (unlike some) that there are other cars out there besides Toyota, Honda and Nissan. I also like to drive something that isn't seen at every intersection. In the past two days I have recieved over a dozen compliments and "what kind of car is that" from people. It was just like when I first got my Celica in Dec 1999, ah it's like deja-vu or is that vuja-de....

Congrats on the new car. The RX-8 was actually one of my 2 choices I was thinking of when I upgrade next year; However after seeing the dyno numbers, there is no way I'd buy a car that is slightly better performance wise than my celica. Nice car though.

09-26-2003, 07:54 PM
Some of you keep talking 'performance', but factory stock, the
RX-8 betters the GT-S. For example see Road and Track's Nov 1999 test of the GT-S: skid pad = 86g/700 ft slalom = 63.6/braking from 60 mph = 130ft, from 80 mph = 212/0-60 = 6.8, 1/4 mile = 15.4
Road and Track April 2003 test of the RX=8:
Skid pad=88g/700ft slalom = 65.4/braking from 60 = 114ft, from 80ft = 202ft/0-60=5.9 and 1/4 mile = 14.5
Anyway you look at it the 3000 lb RX8 outperforms the 2500 lb GT-S. Is there a 'performance' test I failed to include? I know these are magazine numbers, but they are from the same magazine, so it's the best apple-to-apple comparison I could find.

Mark Twain once wrote: "There are lies, damned lies, and statistics" - as for JD power reliability ratings - you will note most of the 'top' cars are ones that older (more mature) people drive, and mostly older people are the ones that respond to the surveys. Toyota sells a whole lot more Camrys and Avalons than Celicas, in fact Toyota probably sells more Camrys than all Mazda models combined. The JD power surveys are good for a point of reference as are the car magazines, but to take that information as gospel, could be very misleading.
Like I wrote earlier, I'll let you all know how it goes with the RX-8.

For the price, he could have gotten a better performance car right off the show room floor. My choice would have been the STi. But I've driven the Rx8 and a Rx7. Rotaries own. The sound, smooth engine ect.... with the advancements that Mazda put on the new wankel engine a nice rotary shop could do wonders for that car. As long as he takes care of the engine with scheduled maintanence and doesn't do anything stupid the car should run long and hard.

People here seem to so easily forget that there are many factors involved in purchasing a car. Perhaps having the most kick ass performance car isn't a priority for acilecdps6.?. There are many many cars in the $30k-$35k range and some are more sporty than others. To put down the RX-8 because it's not an STi or EVO or 350z is stupid. It's not supposed to be like any of those cars. There are different strokes for different folks. Would I have purchased an rx8? Probably not, but it's still a nice car.

Some could say the same about Toyota's LOL being cheap ass car to begin with!! I have owned 4 Toyotas, most were pre 2000 models, in fact I had a 1993 Corolla that went to hell and back many times still ran like a champ with 400,000+ miles on it, but guess what my new Celica even though I love it so just isn't built worth a damn!!!! In fact I have lost all respect for Toyota after reading everybody's complaints about warranty work and so on, plus a few of my own personal experiences, I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER TOYOTA, they USED TO BE EXCELLENT CAR but NOW they suck, and this doesnt go just for Toyota, in fact most new cars are POS's, no offense but new cars jsut do NOT last!!! My next car will be a early 1990's car that is in decent shape and still runs ok, IMO new cars are not worth the money, ANY OF THEM!!!!!!!!! nOT TRYING TO BE AN ASS OR ANYTHING BUT THAT JUST MY OPINION ON NEW CARS!!! Dont get me wrong there are some bad ass ones out thatI like very much but the question is will u see many of them last 10 years, more than likely not!! However to the guy that bought the RX8 congrats as long as u happy then roll with it!!!! The RX8 is a nice car but just dont know how its going to be in the long run, my g/f and here fa,ily have had many MAzdas and most that they owned were POS's however I think that Mazda has turned some things around in there company so perhaps you will have much better luck than they did, I hope so and again congrats on the RX8, its kinda growing on me!!

Well my TOYOTA is from 1985...
my other TOYOTA is from 1989.
we dont really know about the newer toyotas because we haven't goten that far down the road, and it really seems like a LOT of new car drivers do no longer see the importance of regular maintenance on their cars. I saw a newer looking BMW today with like radiator problems and oil smell-the car could not have been older than 2000...

Dude....I'd love to have an RX-8 to drive...they handle better than my RX-7 does...plus, they can fit four adults comfortably, and have a bit of power to boot.
They're beautiful, well-crafted cars...
I mean c'mon..the car is totally about style and about having a unique car....it's all about the rotary and it's design is celebrated throughout the car, from the steering wheel to the seats to the interior.
Nice choice...I love it!
