Yeah, I know this has been posted many a time but what I want to know is if the removal of the butterfly valve is worth the time and effort. I know it gives almost no performance gains or anything and only gives the engine a louder sound, but how long does it take to do and can it be put back in if I decide to put it back? Sorry but this whole butterfly valve thing is a fairly new concept to me.

its a dumb mod, but i just did it. it took me around 10 minutes. i just followed the horrible instructions and took it out. yes it is possible to put it back in. it doesn't take anytime at all. i'm getting a short ram intake soon! its on its way...and i can't wait to install that b*tch!

2002GT_Celica, the removal of the butterfly valve is really just a mod that is done to get the satisfaction of modding your car when you don't have any money to spend on your car. It does not offer any real gains, the gains that people feel after removing the valve are probably 95% phsycological. When I removed my stock air box for a short ram intake, I saw what every one was talking about. To be honest, from what I saw, I could see how removing the valve might actually cause a DECREASE in torque.
If you don't have any money to spend on an intake, but you still want to mod your car, then this is a worth while mod because of the fun you will have doing it and the satisfaction you will feel after you are done. If you are looking for real ways to increase the power of your Celica, removing the butterfly valve is not one of them.

I agree that this mod is mostly a placebo mod. The performance increases are extremely minor as far as actual HP and torque.
The throttle response and sound are about the only tangible differences, and thats only because your airbox is breathing a little better now.
Also, this is an easy mod to undo. Just pop the butterfly back in, and reconnect the hose and its back to factory fresh.
Taking it out takes about 10 mins, and you don't even need any tools.
As far as creating a decrease in torque?
I can't really see that happening here. The butterfly valve is there only to serve two purposes.
-provide sound dampening for the engine when car is idling.
-restrict airflow during idle times so that the engine uses a little less gas.
When the throttle begins to to open up, the butterfly also opens to let more air into the engine, however its design is incredibly restrictive and removing it provides better airflow to the filter.
Of course this does very little considering the fact that the airbox has an extremely narrow opening to begin with.
This is why the best solution is to completely rip out the air filter and install an intake of some sort.
Of course if you are like me and would like to mess with it a bit, but you aren't ready to fork up the $$$ for a CAI, you could throw in a high flow airfilter dropin replacement like the TRD Filter or K&N Filtercharger.
The HP boost is only like about 2 or 3 horses, but combined with the butterfly is enough to get a taste for future mods...

It's a Ghetto-liscious mod.
Just get yourself a cool air intake. Best mod to get anyways.
If you can afford a 02' celica, surely you can afford that.

From what i've heard, the fuel savings by leaving it in, is about as significant as the HP gains you get by taking it out... :p
Like i said, one of the functions of the butterfly is in there to save a bit of gas when you are pretty much stopped or idling.
the other 90% of it is for sound dampening on the intake, so naturaly removing it would make the enigine sound more... "Ghetto-liscious" :werd:
This spring, i'll put in a damn CAI and get it over with. But for right now, I have my stock airbox as pimped as can be without taking a hacksaw to it to create a larger intake hole.
(I'm sure toyota service would love it if I did that)
