Hey all...

I'm up for another set of tyres.. running past the wear marks now.

The last set was Yokohama A539s and they were great. Now to try something new.

I was thinking of going with Dunlop FM901s. I made a few calls and people are saying these are too loud. I have been told to go with the new Dunlop 3000A.

Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations?

Cheers

Dave

Yeah, not sure.
I myself have to replace two front tyres, Im going for the Bridgestone Potenza G3 tyres. They've got good grip and arent loud, but they wear quicker than most tyres!

Hi.... I am now using GIII now and it sems like it's the best tyre comparing in the same grade, It sure gives better wet tractions than A539 and FM901, and you better forget about the 3000A

my opinion GIII>ES100>FM901>ST115>T1-S

if you want something better, go for higher grade tyre such as S02(better dry grip), S03(better wet grip), Eagle F1 GDS-3, P-Zero, AVS Sport, SP9000 not good, or even R compound tyre such as A038, D01J, Azenis Sport...

Depends how much you want to pay, I suppose. The S02s are a very good tyre but also extremely expensive. Ditto the Pirellis.

I've never been fond of Dunlops, so cannot comment.

In terms of a good value tyre, have you considered either the Kumho 712 Supra Ecsta or the Falken GRB FK451? I've had the Falkens and the performance was very impressive but they were VERY loud.

Apparently the Kumho's have similar grip (awesome in the wet) but are not as loud.

Might be worth considering if your budget doesn't extend to Bridgestone or Pirelli!

Just got some AVS ES 100's. Can't wait to hit Wakefield!!! It was bit of a toss up btw Azenis RT's and the ES 100's... I chose ES 100's in the end cos they were the same price but ES 100's would be better in the wet. RT's would've been great on the track though

Yeah...I'm also in the market for a new set of tyres...
I've been on the eagle F1's......but i've found them pretty loud....they howl on the freeway which is a bit annoying.

Which is the better of Kumho 712 Supra Ecsta or the Falken GRB FK451? And where's a good (cheap) place to shop.....I've heard Tempe tyres is pretty cheap?

Also....off-topic, I've currently got 215/40/17 and I'm thinking about changing to 225/45/17 ......will this be ok? And also...will the stock spare still be ok?...I think that's 205/55/15

Most major retailers should do both the Falken and Kumho.

I've heard that Quickfit do the Kumho's pretty cheap.

I have had the Kumho 712. Great tyre IMO. I bought the Goodyear Eagle F1...absolute crap...no grip in the wet
I have had the Falkens, not sure which ones though, and I was quite impressed with the grip.

I am up for new tyres shortly so will be doing a bit of research and will let u know how I go

Last set I sas on were Yokohama A539's, to be honest I was pretty disapointed. Great in the wet overall, but not up to my expectations in the dry. Straight line braking and outright speed cornering grip/feel were defintely not it's strong suits. Got really annoyed with the soft sidewall.

I'm on Bridgestone Grid III atm, very good tire. Almost had a few incidents aqua-planing when braking hard in a straight line and going fairly quick through roundabouts in the wet. (suprised me as I never experienced the probelm before on the A539's.)

M SPEC, how often do u go through tyres? It's great to hear yr feedback cos magazine tyre reviews are crap. I guess u'd always do yr tyre tests on bits of road that u know like the back of yr hand!!!

The ES100 is the first sticky tyre I've used so nothing to compare to. The other tyres I've driven on were all stock OEM tyres that are designed for economy and longevity (Dunlop SP Sport, Falken ZEIX crap, and OEM Celica SX Trampios).

I go through a set of tyres in about a year (with rotations every 5K). I'm not loyal to any particular brand. I'm just the type of guy who'll drive the car hard, just to find the limit of the tyres.

Hi guys....well, back from a whirlwind 6-weeks backpacking around Europe.

Just wanted to resurrect this thread and see if those that were in the market for new tires have gone ahead and got 'em. If so which ones?

I've ended up ordering a set of 215/45/17 Sumitomo HTR Z II's, which I'm getting on this weekend. A little bit more expensive than the Kumho's ($225) ...but cheaper than the yokohama es100's ($260)...which were my other choice, but feeling a little poor after Europe :)

sounds good, but beware you might experience a power loss since you now have to turn a larger diameter wheel with the 45 profile tyres.

Mate, where did you get the quote from? The cheapest I found was Tempe Tyres and Matthews Tyres in Chatswood. Both quoted $200 for Yoko ES 205/15/55 but that didn't include installation/disposal/environment levy. Ended up being $220ea. Make sure you ask for the final price for a proper comparison.

BTW i like the ES100's. It feels like i've got new brakes and suspension. Good tyres make a big difference!

wow.....they are more expensive for the 17" though....that would probably account for the bulk of the difference.

got quotes from various tyre shops in Baulkham Hills, Seven Hills, Castle Hill and then finally Australia Best gave me the $258 quote per tire for 215/45/17......

Fiery...yeah, I thought about that.....but I've heard the diff is pretty min, and I want to have a bit more of a comfy ride...if it really affects my performance.....then I'll go back to 215/40

:)

Anyone who has the Yoko AVS ES 100's - are these noisy at all? Someone told me the Yoko's make like a slapping sound??

Im still on stock 15s atm, and nearly in need of new tyres. Cant decide whether to just replace the 15s or go up to 17s :/

Hey there

your best bet would be to change to 17"s if you have the money as there are a lot more tyre options in the 215/45 17 size
versus the stock 15" rubber

but it also depends on what type of tyre you are after

cheers

I was told that if I want to go for a 215, then it has to be with a 40 profile, as a 45 make the overall diameter too large. Anyways,.. the 215/40/17 are a BIT too expensive, so I would stick with a 205/45/17

Basically, Im after a tyre that sticks really well especially in the wet, and lasts a fair while. I was recommended the Yoko AVS ES100 and the Khumo 769.

i got Yoko AVS ES100 205/15/55. They aren't noisy. Haven't pushed them in the wet...

most 215/40 17 would be "illegal" to run from a load rating point of view as most of them would be lower than the minimum 87

215/45 17 is what is recommended for a +2 fittment from the stock 15" size
