View Full Version : Drilling the stock swaybar?

I read an article in GRM about setting up a GT for AX'ing. They mentioned drilling extra holes in the stock swaybar to stiffen up the front.
Has anyone tried this and had any good/bad experience? I am keeping my car in stock the foreseeable future so I don't need to get too radical.
I run 40 lbs in the front tires and 25-28 in the rear on v700 225/50 r15s. It actually sticks better than I want it too right now. I have konis in box at the house waiting for a chance (and the $$$) to get them installed.

Several of us have done it (me included). Other than some headaches with dull drill bits (lots of headaches!) It wasn't that bad.
I never really got to do a lot of tuning with it on the stiffer setting. I put it there and then the season started and I made no changes after that.
I put it back on the softer setting since I got the Koni's.
I'm actually going to make an extension for the bar so I can soften it even further. I will be testing this next month. I'll try multiple settings with no other changes and see what happens.
While I'm all for reducing body roll (the point of a stiffer front bar) and keeping the rear end in check (the other purpose of more front bar), I am not for making it easier to spin the inside front tire.
Unfortunately, a stiff ffort bar does make inside tire spin even easier, the bar will generate a lifting force on the unloaded wheel, it is just the way they work (the reason stiffer springs are better).
I'm going to soften the bar to see if I can get a little more traction out of the turns...

Autxr,
Would you be willing to go for a really stiff front end if you had a LSD installed?

Yes, I would be willing to go with a stiffer bar if I had a LSD.
Still, 2 wheels on the ground grip better than 1, stiffer springs are almost always a more ideal solution from a pure racing stand point.
But, yes, if I had a LSD I would most certinaly look into a stiffer front bar. Of course, the rules most of us are playing by (SCCA Solo II stock classes) allow unlimited sway bar mods, but not addition of a LSD. SO, we're kind of stuck.
