i have a celica gt auto, and was wondering what rpm to switch at. on autos, if you let go of the gas, it will automatically switch gears for you. i just dont want to go past the normal amount, that could screw up my transmission.

I don't think you have to worry about the gears switching, because the ecu will do everything for you. You won't screw up your transmission unless you abuse it. For example.....
a) Neutral drops
b)Power Breaking
c)Shifting manually L>D2>D

What do you mean by:
Neutra drops?

A neutral drop is revving up the engine when your car is in neutral and then dropping into drive. my father's friend did this and dropped the motor right out of his car. don't do it.

ehh.... i dont think u can redline really if u have it on D... but i know u can if u pull it down to 2/L but then again.. you shouldnt do that on an auto cuz u can really hurt ur baby... and dont try downshifting on that either cuz ur really gonna hurt it and i dont think warranty covers it

Manually shifting an automatic (up or down) will not hurt anything. There is no additional wear, and nothing works any differently than it does in drive, you're just telling it when to do things.
Let's stop spreading this myth.

Exactly. If that were the case, then Toyota and all the other automatic transmission car manufacturers would not put L or 2 or 3 or 4. Even mercedes would be out of luck with their squigly auto shifters even if it may be sequential.

speaking of werid shifters has anyone tried the Jaguar J-Gate shifter? It's WIERD, but I kind of like it. And I don't think shoft from D->3 would be so bad, isn't that jsut like turning off the overdrive? Your just telling the car to limit the top gear.

so its ok to floor the car in an automatic all the time?? cuz on autos, if you let off the gas, the gears will shift for ya, i just dont want the car to be shifting at 5k+ Whats a good rpm to let off the gas at??

you shouldn't really be letting off the gas in order to shift the car.... i doesn't hurt it if it goes above 5k rpms... if you want it to shift lower..... don't step on the gas so hard... otherwise let the automatic, do it's work

why are all the guys with automatics trying to shift all the time? if you wanted to change gears while you drive then you should have gotten a stick!
i mean, you got an automatic cause you didnt want to have to shift all the time ...right?

yea.. if its an auto.. just let it do the job and u do the driving.. automatic cars dont' get hurt easily.. you can floor the damn thing and nothing gets hurt.. ur just using ur engine more.... just don't put in neutral, hold the rev up and then pop it into D. If u want to do stuff like that.. should have gotten a manual transmission

i've been doing thisshicting all or you are talking about, but quite haven't figured out at what rpm to shift from L>2then>D? Where should I shift to get the best resuts?
I'm pretty tired of losing in races and looking for the best.
I would have chosen a stick but i didn't have much of a choice.

no, we got automatics cuz we don't want to use a CLUTCH. but we still want to shift. ;)
