there were lots of flooding here in houston monday and one puddle caught me and my cai by surprise and i went through it in prolly 2500 rpm. i didnt think it was that deep, but then 20 minutes later i had a cel go off. i had to keep on driving (freeway) through several other puddles and couldnt let the car rest until an hour and a half later. and i couldnt take her apart until the day after.

when i did take it apart and removed my cai, i saw that my filter was dry but all dirty and heres where i fcuked up
i used a blow dryer on my filter for like 5 minutes at most, which was the oiled cotton one that aem uses.

my question now is:
did blowdrying my filter mess up the oil or the cotton? i dont know what strength it was on but i had it hot enough to the point where the metal wires kinda stung my skin. im feeling flat spots and some bogging on accelerating, but is that from the water being in my fuel system or the filter being bad?

i got isoheet running through the tank for the weekend but i just wanna know if should switch to the apexi filter now.

thanks in advance,
vincent

i doubt if you messed up the filter by gettin it warm, you prolly got water in the motor which is very bad. i wouldnt drive the car untill you get some better advice than what i can give cuz im not exactly sure what you have to do to get water out, do a search and you will find lots of stuff.

Check out that engine!! I have built three GTS engines and two GT engines already for that exact reason! (CAI + deep water=bent rods sometimes even cracked block). The GTS intake manifold design alone makes it bad. You suck water in and the plenum on the intake is so deep it keep water in the bottom of it, when the engine pics up enough load it starts sucking water. Take it to a technician who has experience w/ these engines. If the engine is still good, you need to at least remove the intake manifold and poor the water out. Trust me the first time I pulled one of those intake manifold I couldn't believe the amount of water that came out UNBELIEVABLE!!

If I remember correctly, doesn't the intake manifold have a drain plug on the bottom? Not 100% sure, but I could've sworn I saw something like that when I took mine off. Removing the intake manifold is a PITA, anyway.

GT-Swhite:
You should get a new filter. Your filter is cotton, and it shrinks when exposed to heat. Even the smallest shrinkage causes restriction on air flow, an since you dryed it for 5 min, there's no doubt it's shrunk down from the original size.

You could've driven with the wet filter cause there was nowhere near enough water to damage your engine in it. It's just as wet as it would be when you drive around in the rain. Like you've experienced, the only dangerous amount of water is very deep, nothing less.

well i put some ISOHEET into a full tank of gas and pulled the EFI fuse for like 5 minutes, but still CEL. so before i use another quart of taht isoheet, i got a few more ideas from where the cel came from

i have the gen1 aem intake and i know that there were problems in both the MAF's O-ring and orienting the MAF itself completely straightforward. i think i may have readjusted it when i took it off to clean it.

if not that i have no choice but to remove the plenum like jsm003 said. it still runs fine and i havent dared gone into lift yet, but i have WOT a couple times. i hope it aint as serious as he said bc i can still drive it ok. its just boggy on some points and i want that cel outta here.

thanks guys

K&N states to never use a blowdryer to dry your filter because its cotton. What happens when you put a cotton shirt in the dryer? it shrinks. It creates holes in the filter when you do this. It does not make it harder for it to suck air through like stated above.

I don't think you understand GT-Swhite. If your motor ingested water, ISOHEET won't do sh!t. You don't have water in your fuel, it's in your MOTOR. If you honestly think there's water in your motor, you've already done damage to the internals. The water would have worked it's way out by now, possibly bending a valve or two, thereby causing the bogging.

Anyone else care to explain?

yeah if you were gonna see any damage it would have already occured. I would say to clean your MAFs and then reset the CEL.

i drove it to school today and it felt as strong as it did before. bogging is almost barely noticeable if it still does.but i havent tried litft yet because theres still a cel.

i know what youre talking about uansari, but i dont think thats the case and thanks for the explanation of the isoheet.

ive cleaned my maf before but this time im gonna use a spray cleaner instead of a qtip and im also gonna clean my throttle body also. after that i think im out of ideas

thanks guys
