It was all looks and price range. I was totally ignorant of cars so I wanted to something imported (parents chevy sucked and my g/f parents only bought Toyotas and they lasted forever). So I only considered Toyota, Honda and VW. I didnt even consider a Acura because I didnt even know that it was part of the Honda family, and that the Integra was in the same price range. The Honda people were total ****s when I went there and I really wasnt that interested in the Civic or Accord. I looked at the Prelude but it was a little out of my price range. I tried a Jetta and I liked it alot but once I saw a Celica it was over. The best loking car on the road.

And now I'm here.

becuz my older cuz had a silver GT auto for her graduation back in 99 and it was soOoO tight looking... at the time i was only 16 and i didn't know that i would like it so much...

when i saved money to buy a car... i actually wanted a TYPE R integ... but then i saw and drove the GTS and it was over... the VVTL-i is really catchy... that's all the sales man has to say .. "give it a test drive" and i loved it...

now i'm looking for something more prestegious, more room, more power, AWD... turbo... black... hmmm can't wait

The celica was simply a work of Art, My brother introduced me to the car on a website and I said wow. I too saved for a type-r but after seeing them everywhere and seeing how out of date the styling was, I needed something different. I went and test drove... of all things, an auto gt... guh..... I came out and said My car is tons faster than that (5 speed z24) so I finally got my grubby mits on a GT-S 6 speed at a dealership and it was over from there.

It was a toss-up between the GT-S and a VW GTI VR6 for me. Although both cars were relatively quick, the Celica handled and braked much better than the GTI, and I preferred the Celica styling. Also, Toyota pricing and reliability was more favorable. I did like the German feel of the GTI, and I sometimes wish my back seat was as usable as the VW's, but overall, I am extremely satisfied.

I had an 84 Celica GT-S when I was a sophmore in high school. I loved that car. It got stolen 4 times. On the 4th time in March 2001, they striped everything. Dude, it had 120k miles on it when I got it from my aunt in 96. Last I drove it, it had 201K miles on it.

I bought my 01 Celica GT-S in Sept 2001. I have 13K miles on it.

In order of importance:

1. Braking.
2. Handling.
3. The kick sold me.

I looked at the car for 2 months but couldn't get over the headlights or rear. I time they grew on me. I went to my dealer and he gave the keys and told me to have fun. I left the dealership and went to the light I liked the braking and handeling. I was looking over the interior and was pleased. I was in the car for about 10 minutes and decided to open it up. WHen the car hit lift and was thrown in the seat well lets say I said, "I got to get me one of these." HAHA.

I orignally bought this car because

#1 it was in my price range
#2 the Integra was too old.
#3 I wanted a car that had new teknology and had improvements in speed, sound dampening, longevity, etc...
#4 I didn't want to get a Mustang or a Hyundai... -_-;;

well, back in dec 00', found out that my transmission in my 90' 300zx was a ticking time bomb. went and look'd at the preludes, to pricey, look'd for a si civic, no luck, couldn't find one. went to acura try'n to find a type r, little pricey also, and plus i would have to order and wait. couldnt wait i had to trade in the die'n z. went to toyota, test drove a celica, a hour later i drove it home. im very happy with it.

I guess its one of those car designs that grows on you... like fungus.

My father drove up one day in a red gt-s. And I saw it and thought it was like an exotic. This was when it just hit american shores and nobody heard of it or had seen it.

He let me take it out, and everyone was staring at it, and people would ask me about it wherever I went. The seats and pedals were all racey looking, interior was nice, it just had kick azz handling and the car smelled good.

But he had an auto and it wasnt that fast. So when I had the funds, I bought my own.

Honestly... I saw the first commercial with them driving through the canyon and the jets flying over head, and said I am going to own that car. 1 year later, it's parked outside. :gap:

Well, it all started when I went looking at cars and decided to test drive the Celica. It was after the test drive that I came to the conclusion that the Celica was a much better choice, as well as much more of a true sports car, than the 96-00 Civics I was considering. I think the handling is what did it for me.

When I was checking out cars it was either gonna be between the Celica, Jetta, or a Durango. After looking at isthistoyota.com page, and viewing the 3D Quicktime files I knew then that the Celica had to be mine.

I test drove freaking EVERYTHING out there. These were all the newest models for 2000 btw.
Mustang GT: handled like poop. IMO
Camaro Z28: handled like poop, HUGE gaps in brand new dash.
Eclipse: underpowered. Didn't like the styling, but the convertible was nice.
Golf VR6: reminded me too much of people I didn't like in High School. Plus I thought it was a tiny little car.
MR-S: Too impractical for driving cross country all the time. It was sweet though.
Integra GSR: styling = old. gearbox = loose.
97 M3: not a fan of the sport coupes. It was cool though.
 1987 Porsche 930S factory slantnose convertible in guards red..... my dad wouldn't sell it. :chuckles: plus the insurance on it could have bought me another car!

Celica GT-S: Awesome. I drove it around for over an hour with the sales person. Hit lift a couple of times. Took some fast turns. Loved everything about it. What else is there to say?

edit: I say the eclipse was underpowered. I drove the GT. It wasn't as powerful as I expected. It drove like this girl's 98 GST auto that I drove once.

My story was a little different from all the ones on here so far, I had my 98 eclipse for a year (transmission died TWICE) so I had to get rid of it and get a new car. I was definately not going to get another mitsubishi, so new eclipses were out. And I was gonna be damned if Honda was gonna get any of my money. (plus I think those cars are sooooooo played acura/civic/prelude everybody and their momma has one, and then their grandmas have them too.) Even those cars are/can be fast, There was just waaay too many of them. Went to the dealer and test drove a celica, and it was all over. That was gonna be my next car. A week later it was ;D

I was like.. what the F is that car..went up to it.. tried it out.. fell in love.. bought it =0) at the time.. no one had a celica and I was just the talk around high school.. now.. im still the talk around high school thanks to my kit and system =0)

I also test drove a lot of different cars. A couple of times me and my dad just went around test driving cars for fun with no real plans to buy. Looking at the celica i was in love with the interior and the gauges and the seats. After test driving it i was in love with the cornering and braking and aggressiveness. The only thing i was unsatisfied with was the engine. 180 N/A HP was pretty unimpressive after a 200 HP turbo eclipse. I REALLY wanted a WRX but that was back when it was literally on it's first days and it was too expensive for my budget. I loved the miata too cuz it was fun as hell and you could throw it around, but my g/f smacked some sense into me...how the hell would i be able to take crap to and from college?! So i put the miata off until i'm like 50 and can afford to have a car simply for fun. I still love the celica every time i get into it :P

That is pretty much how it was for me.. I was watching TV one day.. saw the commerical, and fell in love. I was just in awe when I saw the celica for the first time.. and knew right then and there I had to have that car... and a couple months later.. Dec. 99, it was mine. :) I'm still in love with it.. 2 years+ later.

I've owned a '75, an '81, an '89, and now a '02 Celica. In each case my purchasing criteria was the following, no necessarily in this order:

1) looks
2) performance
3) reliability
4) gas mileage
5) operating cost

I know there are a lot of rocky racers on this board, but where I drive, I rarely get the chance to go over 90 mph, let alone 140 mph. I bought the car for the best balance of my criteria, not just straight line performance. My new car is fun to drive, dependable, and I've been wanting one ever since I saw the first '00 on the car lot. I could have bought pretty much anything under 30k including putting a deposit on a 350Z.

What other cars offer this overall balance of purchase criteria?
An RSX - has 4 of the 5, but let's face it it's ugly
A WRX - has 3 of the 5 - I'm not keen on turbo reliability - it's also butt ugly
A 350Z - 3 of the 5 - gas mileage questionable and while the front of the vehicle is awesome, the back is butt
A Focus - 3 of the 5 - reliability will suck, and its ugly
A VW - not keen on turbos, reliability is ???
Eclipse - not reliable, heavy, not something you can throw around

That's my take

I bought mine because my ONLY Acura dealer in Hawaii tried to rip me off for a '00 Type-R. They wanted 4k more than the msrp and wouldn't budge. Toyota cut me a deal and I paid 5k less than what Acura wanted. If they had given it to me for even just a couple hundred over MSRP, I'd prolly be driving an R right now, but they're greedy bastards so here I am. I'm more than satisfied with my choice.

I remember when I went out to buy a new car....
I was going to settle for a Passat cuz they had a good deal
on a lease. The sales rep was a snob so we drove off to
check out a used Celica cuz i didnt want to spend that
much money on a downpayment. Drove past a dealer and saw
this electric blue Celica just bad ass! First thing i noticed when i
saw it from the rear was the red GTS badge and I thought
to myself "ooops gotta go, im not going to afford it".
Test drove it.......there goes the bank account.
Spent it all but im one hell of a happy guy. The car I wanted in
the first place.

Civic got stolen, insurance gave me money... this car just came out.. it looked sweet, and the 6-speed sold me.

02-21-2002, 10:44 AM
i had been car window shopping for 6 months and one of the cars i had looked at was the celi. my ex at that time said i wouldn't get it cuz it sat too low. and of course that egged me more to get it. when it actually came down to it, i shopped for two weeks and it was b/w a 98 mercedes, 01 x-terra, 99 acura tl, or 01 celi. i ended up gettin' neither because i felt like the sales guys were d!ckheads, so night b/f driving up to orlando from miami i found this lil 00 black celi at an awesome price with incredible low mileage (5900). i bought it. only thing i regret is not getting a 6-speed gt-s. god only knew how far i wanted to take it (performance wise) and forgot to mention it to me! i love my negrita! :)
