read it today on automotive weekly, the engine that are effected with sludge problems are the 5SFE(inline-4) and the V6 IMZ, bulit date from july 1996 to july 2001.

Nothing to worry for us 7th gen celica owner, but there are many 6th gen cely and camary/solora(v6) owner around here which has uses those 2 engines. others car effected are the seinnea(sp?) and i think one of the suvs uses the v6 also.

The problems that was noted was a head gaset leak that lead to coolant in the engine. also said was a design flaw that cause the temp in the head to be 30 degrees more then pervious models. They're trying to get a class action law suit on toyota, so people with those engine might want to get in on it.

You guys are included also.

The increase in temperatures was to improve emissions. (5S-FE)

The 4Runner, Tacoma, & Tundra uses the 5VZ-FE motor, which is a Camry block motor also.

We recently made a decision to reimburse owners of certain 1997-2001 Toyota and Lexus vehicles for engine problems related to oil gelling, even though all of our evidence indicates the problem is caused by improper maintenance-not by a product flaw.

Why would a company do that?

We did so voluntarily because we care about our customers and believe the experience of owning and driving our products should mirror the high quality of the vehicles themselves. And frankly, we take great pride in the reputation our dealers and we have earned as the industry benchmark for quality and reliability. We also hope this goodwill offer will heighten awareness of the importance of regular maintenance.

it's sorta like a whole bunch of celica drivers trying to get the entire celica 6-speed tranny recalled because by fixing the misshifts, toyota admits it was at fault.

keep it up, soon toyota won't be doing anything nice for customers anymore.
