View Full Version : EXTREME COLD starting

ok so today i got out of work after letting my car sit for 8.5 hours in the almost 0 degree weather, and i know that the fluids in the car are near frozen and when turning the car over, it doesnt want to start as fast. but when i went to start her up today, the cranking went really slow and right before it started i got a NASTY metal on metal scrapping noise. and that noise scared me really bad because i thought i did something bad to my car. but after talking with krysy, she said she got the same thing this morning when she started her car.
i know i have plenty of oil in my car, but has anyone else had this horrible sound in the past few days while trying to start their cars? im just wondering if its a celica thing i've never experienced before or if me and krysy did some major damage to our cars :(

nope its not... a warranty will just covers certain parts that break before a certain mileage. it doesnt get you free oil changes unless your parents struck a deal with the salesman to get free oil changes thrown in
wish i had a GTS with the AP for my first car :sadpace:

i DOUBT you get free oil changes greg...usually the first one dealers "throw in" with the deal. but its not a warrantee thing.

no just havent had the time
Screw letting the dealer change my oil even if it is free. The one and only time I let Toyota change my oil (they gave me my 1st oil change for free) they didn't put all the clips back in or didn't put them back in right, and after about 10 miles of driving around hearing a scraping sound, which went away after I hit 35 mph, I stopped my car and proceeded to see that half of my plastics fell down and melted into a useless oblivion. That one piece that coverers your oil filter is $80 alone!! Luckily a friend of mine sold his celi and gave me his before he took it in for free. Gotta love celica brothers.... So moral of story, cahnge your own oil, it takes 5 min., tops and you'll feel much better knowing that you did it yourself. Plus if you mess up, you can only blame it on yourself, whereas if toyota messes up, they won't admit it or replace it anyway.

mine was so frozzen...it didn't even turn over at all. no noise what so ever. i knew it was not the battery cuz all the lights inside the car came on
so i had to push start my car. i had some1 push the celi w/ my rolla :D

talk about ur self matt. a DIY oilchange cost me $22-28.....only use synthetic oil :D (in motor and tranny)
plus add about $10 to that cuz i alway brake the clips that hold up the plastic underneath. so it cost about a $1.25 x 7-8

No he paid out of his wazoo for that. They tried to doop me into that deal also. I said hell no. I use my mobil 1, I bet they don't. Honestly how much did you pay just for that warranty. It's a great warranty don't get me wrong. But it's expensive. I might even have the paper work here on what they were asking for it. If I can ever find that crap.

still a poosie move IMO....if a pipe breaks...then MAYBE release the kids early if its that bad a pipe break.
as for walkin kids...fawk em'....all they gotta do is put on a few layers, cover any exposed skin and they'll be fine.
i mean its one thing if you gotta be outside ALL day, like me for instance....i wont work tomorrow due to the cold, but in my orfession, if i layer up TOO much im to bundles up to work..so anything below 15-20 i wont work..other than that...fawk it...deal with it...we live in NEW ENGLAND....its part of ou r area for gods sake. no need to cancell school for a lil cold.
this is just an excuse to make a long weekend a day longer:rolleyes:

I had problem starting my car too, its a GTS manual and for some reason it would not start before 11 AM or untill its warm, i live in jersey and its been very cold lately, i thought it may be the battery so changed the batter, but still could not start the car this morning. Took it to the dealer, CRAP they told me the car starts fine. I told them very specifically that it does not start early morning and to check the starter connections, because when i try to start it in the morning it does not crank , NO SOUND, NOTHING, just would not start, my lights and sterio all work fine, no sign or any battery drain, once the temperature increases about 15 degrees it cranks up right away. Does anyone else have a similar problem??

this i the exact same problem i have. don't worry about it man. this happen to me 3 times with in the past week. heck.....it even happen to me today.
this happends when you don't drive ur car within 15-20hr of the previous time, it freezes. there is nothing wrong with ur starter, battery or oil line.
u just need to push start it. just turn the ingnition all the way(till all the interior lights up), put it in first and have acouple of people push you. when ur on a decent roll just let off the clutch and give a bit of gas. it will start up. once it starts up, let it warm up for about 20minutes or so and then run the car hard for about 5-10 minutes. after this it will be fine in future start up's (unless you leave it in 0-10degree weather without starting it for about a day or so)

isnt that why people get a turbo timer though? you can shut the car off but it allows the turbo to spool and cool off w/o you waiting.

2 words, turbo timer. nice easy fix and it will look damn cool in the scooby in the little area to the left of the cup holder. plus it will help your trubo last longer

Yes turbo timers are quite cheap ($100). And some have very useful features. My apexi turbo timer allows me to view the o2 sensor voltage (in real time) for tuning. Or it will 'allow' me once I get everything installed

I had a little trouble starting my car when it was really cold but i just had to push the clutch really hard and then it worked.
It's also hard to shift when it's freezing.
Haven't heard any weird noises tho.

i used to have that clutch problem last year in the freezing cold, but for some reason, it hasnt really happened too often this year. i know a few other people have had that problem too. but i got the scraping noise again on friday morning after starting it up for the first time. no problem driving or anything though. oh well

I guess when they cover a misshift now.....they have quite a bit of experience from many many other misshifts they would have covered. so in a way their workmenship would be pretty decent now. when my friend misshifted mine almost 3 years ago.....the westbury dealership took my car in as a project i guess cuz they havn't done a misshift case b4 mine :sadpace:

let me tell you about last weekend's fun experience...
i hadn't started my car in just about a week, and after the extreme conditions all last week, i was scared sh!tless to start her up...crankity-crank-crank-crank slow as mollasses starting...actually turned it over for a split sec then went back to cranking...turned it over again, got her started, then that's when sh!t hit the fan
background: on the Acura CL Type S/TL Type S, there's a 'check engine' light, a VSA light (Vehicle Stability Assist), as well as a VSA triangle light (shown in the below pic inbetween the fuel/temp guages...VSA light (located on the tach guage next to the 1st gear light on the bottom) is a diagnostic, while the VSA triangle light lets you know if VSA is on or off (when it's not lit, it's engaged)
so after running the car for about 10 seconds, check engine, VSA, and VSA triangle pop on, one after the other, after the other...first thought in my mind was o sh!t!!! (usually, when the instrument panel starts lighting up like that, the tranny just went), so i was like how can my tranny go, i'm standing still??? as it turns out, my plugs were misfiring...and in order to reset the system, you need to disconnect the battery...done it twice already with no luck...and these plugs are SUPPOSED to be good for 105K...i'm on 32K currently lol

what do you mean by "my plugs were missfiring"?? what plugs??
BTW.....you should atleast start ur car once a day and keep it running for about 10-15minutes (even if u don't run it)
i didn't run my car for days on in and i had to push start it cuz of the cold weather

spark plugs??
if they misfire, they throw engine timing off, sometimes pinging, stuff like that

gotcha...VSA is our auto limited slip diff...what it does on our cars is cuts engine power and applies power to any wheels that have grip
mock simulation of what quattro or quadra-action do

last winter, I didnt start it or touch it for 2 weeks straight at one point. actually, I did that twice. Usually, i drove it once a week. Man, for that reason I dont miss queens. I didnt start the car, cuz I never drove it, I never drove it cuz I could never find a parking spot in my neighborhood. Thank God that's all over.

fuel is actually cut off to the engine while brakes are applied just enough for the car to slow down and regain traction

I had this problem yesterday. I don't know how cold your cold is down there but up here in Alberta it was -36 C (-48 with windchill). I went in to work at 8 and left at 5 and it was plugged in all day . I got that same nasty sound for about 10 seconds then it went away. I'm not sure what that is but after letting it heat up for 15 minutes it drove home fine although the clutch felt spongy because it was so cold. Just make sure your oil is topped up and that it is 5W - 30. So does anyone know what that sound is....shouldn't plugging it in heat the oil and engine enough to avoid that? It just sounds extremely bad for the car but I sure as hell am not taking the bus to work.

but i've been getting more and more of this sound lately. im wondering if it has to do with the clutch and pressure plate. maybe the clutch is just sticking and doesnt let go until the car is turned over? i dont know...

not really
i've been training/competed in triathlons & biathlons for over a year now in freezing cold, not to mention swim in 50 degree water (Hempstead Harbor, Oyster Bay)...you'd be surprised how warm you get/stay when yer training during the winter

i can understand the whole training in cold weather. heck i used to play play ball in December, January, February outside. the only time we stoped is when it snowed and the court was wet. so i know what u mean about keepin warm in cold weather
but going onside in snow and taking a pic is a different story :D
