I only have one set of keys for my MR-S spyder and now they are missing. I went to toyota and they said the mr-s keys are chipped so i cant just give them the vin # to make another one. They said they need to download some programming and make a new key and remote commander. Well in short its gonna cost me about 650-700 for this. 4 1/2 hours of labor ($80 hour), $150 for a new remote, and $120 for two new keys. And i gotta get the car towed to the dealer. dam this sucks, anyone can think of a better way??

When I bought my MRS I got a tag number. Take it to the dealer and they can cut you a key.

If worse comes to worse, you might be able to get a new key ignition. My mom broke the key in the ignition of here nissan, and the thing with two keys was $85. You can get new alarm fobs from ebay cheap and have them programmed for an okay price at the dealership.

Go to spyderchat.com and search for the same issue you are currently experiencing. In fact here is the link http://www.spyderchat.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=2879

The chip in the key is programmed by the car itself. It's a relatively easy process and in no way should it cost $600 nor take 4 hours.

They just blew wind up your ass with that one. NO key costs that much...You own a spyder from Toyota, not Ferrari

The key that you have has a transponder chip in it and if you lose all of your keys you could get a new one cut but it will only open the doors and turn the ignition on. The engine will not start unless it sees the chip. The link above is for programing a new key but you have to have an old one to do it and it has to be a master ket not a sub key. If all of the keys are lost you have to use the toyota scan tool and some special software to retrieve the seed number for the ecu. After you get the seed number you have to go to the tis system (technical information system) and enter the seed number and wait for a reply from the tis giving you a number to allow you access into the immobiliser ecu so you can reprogram the key. It is a pain and on some models you have to locate the ecu and ground a certain wire. You got lucky cause some models will not let you get a seed number and you have to buy an ecu and a key then pay to have them put in.
Sorry for the long post I just wanted to clear up a few things.
They arent ripping you off they are just doing it by the book.
Hope this helps

my celica doesnt have a chip (solid metal keys) but my prelude did. When I wanted new keys for it they had to replace the random key code generator inside to car which had to be shipped from japan.

yeah u r completely right. If i had the master key then this wouldnt be a problem. The original toyota dealer i went to told me i was going to have to buy a new ecu which was $2000. Then i went to another dealer and they knew what they were doing. I finally got the car back today. They had to special order the keys for me which took a couple days. It ended up costing $456 with 2 master keys and one remote commander. This would have been alot cheaper if it wasnt a transponder key. Cause toyota told me they could cut me a normal key but it will not start the car cause it is not the chipped key. well i'm done....will post some pics of the car soon :)
