View Full Version : Could this be a problem?

sorry for the vague subject, but i'm not exactly sure how to word it...

i noticed tonight that the little metal flap that covers the gas tank(the one you see when you take off the cap, it moves out of the way when you put gas in) does not appear to be there... i couldn't see it that well because it was dark, but with the light i couldn't see it, and putting my finger in there i couldnt feel it.

what effects could this have on the gas line if it fell in there? and how would i fix it?

my car is idling funny and has gotten a lot slower(according to recent track times) than it used to be, so i've been checking on plugs, injectors, compression, and all that good stuff, but could this be the root of it?

U said a while ago that ur car milleage is 50K + right??? I would say, have the dealer check the fuel injectors, they can clean it for u for $189.99. Goodluck

Mine also doesn't have that little metal flap and I am 99% sure that no Celica does. Who knows why though.

mine used to have it... that's the whole point.... where did it go and what's it doing...

it's not so much my car breaking down, but i feel like somethings wrong, so i'm checking EVERYTHING to make sure i dont come up with a serious problem...

That little thing is just a splash guard. Your gas cap is what maintains pressure in your fuel tank. So unless it broke of and somehow got stuck in your fuel rail then it shouldnt have anything to do with performance.

Empty everything you can from the cabin. Pick the car up and shake it. If you hear something rattling around it is the flap. :fawk:

There is no way to tell where it has gone unless you drop the tank to look inside. Have FIFE steal the scope that the doctor is going to stick down his throat, run the tank empty and look around for it. Maybe it is caught on the pick-up tube and impeding the flow through the pump. Sorry just a bit of humor.;)

do you guys think toyota would cover something like this? i mean to figure out where it went...

They probably won't cover searching it out. I do know that some shops have a scope that they can use to check out the inside of the cylinders by going through the spark plug holes. Call your dealer to find out what your options are before finding out if they will cover it under some sort of warantee.

Go have your engine compression checked and have a digonstic done. That way youll at least know its not the engine.

i'm looking into buying an OBD II checker thing and also a compression tester... i have no money at the moment... a dealer wouldn't do the compression check for free would they? if not i'd rather just do it myself...

This discussion had come up once before and a lot of people said they didn't have one. Mine is a 2000 GTS and I have never had it. I always thought it was weird that it didn't.
