ATTENTION 56k'ers PICTURES INSIDE!

---- For better quality please size the pictures down to 800x600, sorry did not have time.

----Sorry for the quality and grammer, in a hurry =)

Hey all! I know I am posting under the wrong section of the fourm, but this place gets looked at the most. Over the week, I was intrested in painting my interior, my dash, glove box, and gear box plastic. Anyway the items I bought were:

1 can of Plastic Primer
1 can of Black - Gloss Spray Paint.
1 can of High Bound Clear Coat.

Now, if any of you have painted before you would know you basicly, clean the surface, sand if need be, primer it, paint... clear coat right? Well this is my story!

Day: 1 Primer!

After a few hours of primer, spraying only 1 or 2 coats (recomended is 1, but sometimes 1 can't over it all) my plastics were looking good.

All the peices looked like that, hurray!

Day: 2 High Gloss Paint!

Well day 2 rolls around, I'm excited as can be, I start to paint all my plastic black, useing light coats, and making sure not to over spray. After an hour or so the black paint was done.

Later that evening, I went outside to check on the drying process. Upon reaching my paint table, I started to notice small imprefections, almost like a cracking. Long story short, the PLASTIC primier, was CRACKING! Just what you don't want. It seems that Fusion based plastic primers do NOT work well with interior plastics.

Day: 3 REWORK

Well luck was in my hand, I had an idea to remove the paint, and start over. I took your average can of paint thinner, poured it into a bowl. With a brush (yes a brush) I started to paint the paint thiner all over each peice, after around 30 minutes all the paint had been removed! Success! I then cleaned each peice and this time started painting WITHOUT primer, only used the black paint.

Day: 4 Ahh so pretty!

In the morning, I walk outside to see my nice new painted (completely dry) plastic peices!

Day 5: Clear Coat!

Well the next day, I decide to break out the Clear coat, most of the hard work is done, and its time to make my work look pretty! I lightly spray all the peices with a clear coat for about 40 mins. I was tired so I took a break and ventured into my room to play video games!

Alittle later I went outside and stood there shocked! The Clear Coat and the PLASTIC black spray paint did not go well! Once again each peice started to CRACK horribley! By this time I was starting to get VERY VERY pissed off. So I once again had to start over with the paint thiner and black paint.

Day 6: Finally!

Finally I am done with all the stupid painting, hateing Clear coat and hateing primer at the time I decide to spray one last coat of black before I place it in the Celi. Few hours later I install the pecies, and this is the finished product!

CONCLUSION:

Well aside from the few imperfections this was a pain in the ass job. I recomend either useing a special primer and clear coat, or not useing them at all. For some odd reason I acutally had fun doing this. I just didn't want to spend the 100 bucks at a body shop to get it painted, and it turned out pretty good =D

Ya... I don't know what I am going to do yet, the flash reflecting off the gloss paint doesn't reallly make it look good. I mean its decent... not very professional but then again it doesn't look like some 12 year old kid did it either. Wish I Could get you guys some betyer pictures

To get the paint smooth, you need to wet sand between coats. 600 grit works well. Once you're on the final coat, you want to wet sand with higher grits to make the surface as smooth as possible before you buff it for a glossy shine.

i paid $50 to have my center console painted black. they were also able to do the area around the AC controls and it turned out pretty nice. It doesn't look good to have everything painted black except for that section IMO. looks unfinished

You should have followed the instructions I emailed you....
I guess they didn't come out horrible, but I wouldn't be surprised if you found yourself wanting to redo them very soon. ;)

edit: and this really, really belongs in 'apperance mods.'

This will get rid of any oils or dirt that have built up and help the primer stick better.

Also, it's important to keep an eye on the temperature and humidity when you're doing this. If it's too cold or too humid that could cause some of the problems you encountered.

suggestion when you paint the center console: buy the A/C decals and stick them right on top of your old A/C icons. paint it and do whatever, then remove the stickers. you will now be able to see through your center console
