check the photo!
i just wrapped the CAI with the special foam as a heat shield..
keeping cold your CAI in the heat summer or in the day.

looking good!! Hope the foam resists heat!!!

Good call, but I think I would rather see the intake pipe when I open the hood.
But maybe my views would differ is I lived in a hotter climate...
who cares what **** looks like if it makes the car faster.

and you have a celica?
Not to be mean but most look at the celica as a "looks fast" car.

Just cut the ends of the zip-ties off, other then that it looks fine.

That's a great idea and all but over an extended period of time the metal of the intake will eventually get hot from the engine. When that happens, it might RETAIN the heat and act as a insulator.
What I did was I made an air ram that puked a cold charge of fresh air from where the driver side fog light assembly should be. As I drive, air gets shoved into this pipe I created and thrown on the filter.

Why not just use header wrap and get the same effect?

doesn't black absorb heat? while white reflects it? so wouldn't it be more beneficial to use lighter colored foam?

okay, I remember back in my del Sol days, there was a how-to on building your own aem replica and it use to say only use white on the inside of your piping for that reason. I just went back and checked it and of course, it has been changed.

OK, while this idea was good in nature you have to realize that the residence time the air spends in the intake tubing is very short, not enough to really make a significant change in air intake temps- especially at WOT. At WOT the intake is drained is less than a second.

You could probably get the intake ceramic coated on the outside (and inside if necessary) to reject engine bay heat.Originally posted by Ugly Pete
:P thats with the sun.
You can paint your cai in ceramic based paint and it will do the same thing. Also, having the foam that tight is not good. You want the foam to fit, but not be compressed. Foam works best at absorbing heat when it is uncompressed, like a sponge is to water. If you wanted the best results, run a metal shield over that. Maybe dryer duct. It will act has a heat shield. Like a heat shield on a muffler.

gold foil reflects the most heat, put some of that one there :) hah

i coated my aem intake with a layer of fiber glass material (fiber glass tape and resin).i can hold onto it when the car is running and count to 1000, slow, without getting my skin burned off.the inside of the pipe doesnt get hot for some reason,as a matter of fact, afterchecking it a few times i realised that it (the aluminum underneath) was actually cool,as if the constant cooler air passing through the inside of the pipe caused it to stay cool.i was actually contemplating trying to make an aem replica from fiber glass, but the coating was good enough for me,so i scrapped the idea.

IMO it would be most usefull for reducing heat soak while at an idle. At speed it shouldn't matter much (as mentioned before).
Another thought, what happens when it gets wet and the water is held up against your intake? :ugh:
