check it out fellas

A friend of mine is a Honda Tech of 12 years
I asked him if an engine oil flush would be necessary
for my car. He said a good way to do it is to put about
1/2 of 1 qrt of ATF in your engine (if your oil level is low
or you can drain about half a qrt) 100 miles prior to
your regulary scheduled oil change. So basically within
than 100 miles b4 the oil change, the engine is undergoing a cleaning cycle. My friend states that ATF is a cleaning agent
and can clean out the sludge build up in the engine
of the car. I never tried this. Can anyone vouch for such a
statement?

thanks

rx-7 owners use ATF to clean out their engines, but I'm not sure about piston engines.

I've heard of it before. This is a little trick that has been used for years with small and big block V8's.

Yep, this is an OLD trick that's been around awhile - ATF has a very high detergent content hence it's cleaning properties.

So, uh, is it safe?

Well if you change your oil regularly at 3k miles with a good quality oil, I see no reason to use any extra "cleaning" products. I've certainly never seen the need in any cars I've owned :).

I used to work at a local oil change shop changing oil. Generally speaking, newer cars and modern engine oils don't need much help cleaning out an engine.

Although I know many people who use additives, you really shouldnt. They don't really work. Even engine flushes aren't very good for your gaskets (as they may break them down).

Generally, stick with synthetic and you'll do ok. If you want clean, do an oil change twice in a week (that'll probably clean out your engine better than using ATF).

I think any penzoil user can benefit from this. LOL
