earlier today i was sitting at a stop light, i put it in neutral and started revving. I'm not sure what the rpm's were but it was under 2500 and i accidently put it into drive.....
how bad is that on my car???:confused:

one thing i cant understand.... why are all the guys with automatics trying to drive them like sticks? if you want to pop your car in and out of gear while you drive then just buy a stick. they are very easy to learn how to drive.

me and my friend have done 4k neutral drops in his mx3 and it still runs fine..it has about 120k miles on his car and weve done it atleast 8 times..maybe its luck?

I think it doesn't damage a lot the car... but frequent use of it will FXCK UP your car.... I used to do it a lot in my mom's camry.... but now I became such a little tame driver after a speeding ticket :D

i did it maybe 6 times ever and my auto tranny in my 2000 celica gt auto gave out at 30k miles... i would highly recommend NOT doing it...

Hey Z6joker9 just wondering... did you do a tranny swap? I mean from an auto to a 5spd. Because I was planning to maybe do one also sometime down the road. Is there any issues that I should know or maybe the cost?

How about if I switch the gear into "N" at 80MPH at a long downhill and rev my engin to about 3800, then switch back to "D". By the way, 3800 is the speed that the engin would be running if it was engaged the whole time.
Would that cause any damage?

ASM, automatic are not made for that. next time buy a stick... youll have much more fun with it.

Put your car in gear and leave it there, even if you are going down a hill Auto's are not made for going in and out of neutral I read an article on this once and it said you can over heat the tranny by putting it in "N", and of course a netural Drop is bad
I can't stand it when people do Netural drops some of the people who do it think they are cool but they aren't it is just as bad as rice, if you drive an Auto drive and respect it don't pretend you have a stick you are only fooling yourself,
One of my friends has an Auto Civic and he always puts it in "N" when on a hill if there is someone with a nice car around and lets it roll back so it look like its a stick this really pisses me off I'm like do you want to drive my car for a while in traffic and on the hills then you can see how cool it is to roll back when the idoit behind you gets up on you but,
Just to make sure everyone realizes I have no problems with hills or traffic in a manuel, It is just a pet pev of mine when people think they are cool by dring their Auto like a Stick

i used to own a 97 prelude automatic..... and once i was revving up to 6k and by accident put it in gear..... i thought i'd ****ed it up good but it ended up alright

I am very sorry to bring back your bad memory of seeing other people trying to drive a auto like stick. But, I think the original poster of this message just want to know if it bad, and I was just wondering if anyone have *real* technical knowlege and can explain why dropping into "D" is bad.
And, by the way, if you did read all the post, you will realize that no one ever mention "it is cool to drive a auto like a stick".

Is it bad? Yes.
Why? Your flywheel is turning at engine rpm. In an automatic, there is a clutch, connected to a torque converter (gearing) and out to the driveline. Take a quick look under the car, and you'll notice that the whole assembly is tiny.
While a neutral drop in a 82 Lincoln may not be as dangerous - it has a transmission and torque converter the size of a celica.
You are putting a GREAT deal of rotational force onto a clutch/converter assembly that is both small, and light. Something has to give, and it will not be the flywheel, crank, or drive shafts. That leaves the clutch/converter.
Maybe it won't break the first time, maybe not the second. Hell... it might not go after 50. But what you cannot see is the microfractures or stresses in the metal of your converter/clutch assembly. Sooner or later, one of them will give. When it does... boom.
Rev matching in an auto? Sure.. but what gear is the auto in? I suspect the GT Auto is a 4 speed - so you pop in neutral on the highway... what did the tranny do? When you gear back in, the clutch, and converter (now not moving - well... some of it is (and generating heat now) has to 'catch-up' with the drive wheels, and the motor at the same time.) Since everything is moving - it's not the same jolt you get in a neutral drop, but there is a ton of frictional heat in there, which can also lead to failure.
So.. end of story? Keep it in gear if you want to keep the tranny.
