View Full Version : Gude won't do head package...

Hey Guys-
I don't know if this has been discussed, so please excuse me if this is repetitive. I've been planning on getting the Gude package for some time now. I talked to someone there who thought they still made the package, but then talked to Bill himself, who said they have stopped doing the new celicas specifically because they cannot "be dependable." He said that they "blow up enough just in stock condition." He also said that the engine was junk. I don't buy it, but I'm wondering if anyone else has actually gotten the package and had problems. Man, I really wanted that 30hp wheel gain!
Take care guys-

The guy that was suppossed to test it came on here trying to sell the kit he was suppossed to be testing out.
edit: How is a $14,000 dollar engine junk?

Huh??? I don't buy that for a second. Our motors aren't junk. I haven't heard of any problems that our motors have had yet. The only junk motors we get are from misshifts which have nothing in common with how reliable our motor really is. It sounds to me to be a lack of commitment on Gude's part. Who here on the board has had significant motor failures or big problems with the motor? Nobody. Sure we can run 50 and 60 shot's of NOS or turbo and SC them but we can't do a head package???? Come on. That's BS. You mean to tell me we run a 11.5:1 comp ratio stock and our motors are junk. Whatever.

I could be wrong but I don't think the Gude package was ever installed on a Celica. Wonder how he arrived at that decision other than nobody was paying for his stuff without some proof of performance.

it was instaled on one test celica. I think it was some guy on this board know as LBCelica or something of that sort. You might want to check with unison about this. He sold his car after he got the head package. I also remember GUde saying something about how the 2zz-ge was the hardest(complicated) engine he had ever worked on.

No, I remember all this. The guy who had the prototype guide package never did install it on their car. They actually tried to sell it on NC.org for a long time, but no one wanted it because it was completely untested(his car was supposed to be the test car). Then Guide wanted to sell them even though they had never been installed on a car and no dyno runs were ever made. Needless to say, they didn't get any sales from the peeps on NC.org.

Well, I'm glad that I'm not the only one. I guess they said that people from their area were bringing their Celicas in to be tuned, but they "were having so many problems" that it wasn't worth it. I mean, Titan Motorsports at least offers the throttle body and intake manifold bored and such, but I want those cams and that port and polish. Grrr....

If it fails often and catastrophically, it could be considered junk. Cost is not a part of the equation. There have been some very expensive lemons in the history of machinery.

just becuase the engine costs alot of $$ doesnt make it a good engien

Hey Larry, it wasn't that long ago that you told me "keep it full of oil and it should be bulletproof," now I see you got a new ride, and the last time I read about your Celica was when you were taking it apart, what happened?
Yakko, are there any lemons with expensive motors that I might have heard of before? are you referring to production cars, or just machinery in general? Thanks alot, you and the other ITR guy really know your s***

I was referring to machines in general. I have a book at home that lists some of the bigger lemon automobiles in history. But I've seen lots of items that were expensive, but didn't work worth a hoot. The basic idea was that high cost doesn't mean it isn't junk.

i never said the Celica engine was bullet proof.. I think it cant be built to make alot of hp but its far from bulletproof..
as for my Ceilca.. well i had an accident in nov and the car was totaled

Actually there is a guy from the DC area that claims to have the Gude package on his car right now with 12:1 comp ratio also.
His name on here is junkyard.

I'll give Gude a call sometime this week to see what they say.

Well if they didn't test it or do any decent amount of testing. They can't say that our motors are junk. If they think our motors are complicated then I feel bad for the K series honda motor owners as well. Gude won't work on them either probably.

PH was the screen name of the guy that was supposed to test the Gude package but he never put them on and tried to sell them.
I think the Gude people are having trouble with what I was predicting. The VVT is getting in the way, they need to adjust that for more aggressive cams.
I thought Icyjaws sent them his head for development? If so just PM him and see what he has to say...

Is that some sort of foreshadowing as to where his car may be soon?

Gude's idea of improving performance was lame to begin with. First off, why raise the compression ration on an 11.5:1 engine? Why not try making some more power through ignition timing. So to raise the compression ratio, they shaved the heads, making the valve clearance even less. Great idea. Then for their "cams", they reground the stock cams, which is universally agreed upon as being bad since it changes the base circle diameter of the cams. Wait until Joe Alaniz reworks a head for a Celica to see what headwork can really accomplish.

Called Gude. They said that they know nothing about discontinuing their head package w/ cams and even quoted me a price. Something strange is going on. If you want to contact Gude, go to their webpage: www.gude.com or call them at (909)245-7168.

A friend of mine just gave them a call... they claim 40 hp at the wheels! That sounds unreal... I wish it was true... Anyone can confirm that?

Hey-
The first person that I talked to also said they didn't discontinue their package, but talk to the guys at R&D for Gude, and they will tell you that they did. Personally, I hope that they still did make the package...it would be great for everyone.
