Hey, I know most of you guys are pretty knowledgeable about auto-x, next sunday I may go to my first auto-x event, now there is a "driving school" being offered friday and saturday but unfortunately due to work and prior engagements I won't be able to attend, but I could make the sunday auto-x event. Is there anything in particular I would need to know/be aware of? Do I really need a class? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
E.
BTW: the event is March 10th and the info post is in the DC Metro Forum.

You can just go to the autocross (the school would probably be helpful). Typically you get a lot more seat time at a school than at the event.
As for what you need to know, there is a bunch, but mostly just be there on time. Try and find someone with a similar car (Celica or integra) and introduce yourself. Tell them it's your first time and ask if they might have a little spare time through out the day to show you the ropes (most folks are more than happy to).
Hopefully someone will post a link to the novice handbook.

You don't need a school to participate in an AX. If they have the option, sign up as a novice. Arrive on the site as early as it opens, go to the registration table and announce: "This is my first AX what do I do, and can you point out an experienced person who would be willing to work with a newbee?"
you can download the novice handbook here: http://www.tirerack.com/features/solo2/handbook.htm
which will answer the most common questions and give you an idea as to what to expect.
serious AXers are a friendly bunch and will go out of their way to help you get started. Make yourself welcome by LISTENING very carefully to their instructions and try to do it their way. Ask questions, but don't ramble on when they are giving your their time. If there are fun runs afterwards, ask one of the winning drivers, preferably the one that won your class and/or drives a Celi, if they would allow you to ride with them in their car (offer to pay for the run) and/or let them drive your car while you ride along. This will be a major learning experience to feel and see what your car's capabilities are in the hands of an experienced driver, especially if you ask them to verbalize what they are looking at and what their feet and hands are doing. (It's nearly impossible for a beginner to watch the course and the driver at the same time, especially since you will probably be going thru the course MUCH faster than when you were driving.)
