is it bad to redline (or hit lift, in my case) more than 5 times a day? i dont drive fast but i just wanted to know how much wear and tear the gts engine and tranny can take.

psssh. 60k + miles here. hit lift over 10x a day... i do a lot of freeway driving. no problems.

I don't know. But the harder you push a car the less overall life it will have.
Hitting redline probable is not the best thing, but most cars redline and limiter kick in well before it will cause damage.

I hit lift well over 6 times a day some times up into the 20's and I would say about half touch redline and about a 1/4 hit the limiter.

but my car has had it's fare share of problems. Like mest up syncros. and bent valves- and I didn

Just be sure you have good oil and keep up with the changes

:werd: No engine is going to last forever but with a little monitering, conservative driving and regular oil changes You'll be tired of the car before the engine needs replacing/rebuilding.

Higher RPM = more engine wear. Nothing you can do about this.

91K and going strong. Just stay on top of the maintenance.

Maintenance is the life of the car..There are occasional probs that you can do nothing about. But keeping it up is very important.

On that topic: what's the longest duration any of you guys have kept the engine in lift continuosly (>6200 rpm)? I think the longest for me was maybe just under a minute - just curious if the engine can stand up to really hard driving without cooling off periods in between.

The engine was designed to stay in lift for long durations of time on a race course, high revving over 6000rpm-ing awesomeness.

i guess this is only possible in a manual gts b/c my auto stays in lift for less than 2 seconds. at the same time, i assume you have to stop smashing the gas to stay in lift and not redline too badly?

I've done some canyon runs where I've never gone below 6k.. Probably 15+ minutes.

well you guys are lucky, I just recently got a new short block under warranty. The toyota dealer found a nice crack in the short block when I happened to be hitting lift four times on an unlucky day last month:ugh:
