I'm impressed with how reliable the old Integra's engines have been throughout the years. The B-series is definitely a stout little engine. Overall, I think the Celi, Integra/RSX, and WRX have fared quite well reliability-wise. Japanese cars are clearly more reliable compared to the domestic and even the European cars tested.

Yup, consumer reports loves the Celica. They always rank is very high.

It was the drivers that were misshifting that created the problems, then blamed it on Toyota for putting the shift gates so close instead of taking the blame themselves for not paying attention to driving.

Is that why Toyota instituted the 7800 cutoff?

how did the WRX get a good ratting in the transmission department. not that they are unreliable but but most 5 speeds are very weak for the power that most people produce. just a thought

Yepz...sure is. There were TONS of idiots back then. And tons of complainers...I dunno...I think alotta the Celica problem was all about YOUNG kids with 6-spds that thought it was just like a 5-spd...or that they were Speedracer or something. NOONE will ever convince me that it's anything more than the person DRIVING that was the problem. The shifter doesn't move unless you want it to move.
But there were a few engine failures that were kinda representative of the new engine design, I think. John Hotchkis summed it up well when he said parts of the engine just weren't getting enough oil coverage. My engine failure was a result of this...I've got it on vid. :gap:
Still, I'm kinda confused about the WRX's "dash" mark...if you look at all it's factors, how the hell does it just get "average reliability"? Subaru has a GREAT record with the WRX, very few problems with it!!! Even less than the Celica and RSX, too! Anyways, Honda knows how to make good cars...they're just too damn boring looking on the outside and inside to make me want one, though. Plus, you get the SUPER expensive insurance, and all the damn Honda-part-rippin'-hatin' fanatics...
I'm going to Oahu, soon, and that place is just CRAWLING with that type of attitude. My own COUSIN was telling me about how her and her friends got taught how to steal the emblems & crap off of Honda's!!! And these girls are only like 11 to 13 years old! Scary shiat... :wtf:
Still...can't beat the Aloha lifestyle...
Ahem..sorry for goin' off on a tangent. :gap:

Umm...not everyone that purchased a WRX goes out and tries to turn it into an aftermarket powercrusher. Remember if you're modding a car, you're a MINORITY.
It might seem like the majority does, but trust me, you aren't the majority.

I'm wondering how the Celica got a good rating in the transmission dept. It's crap.

Yeah I love my 02 fuel problem...not..I forget what it is but something fell into the gas tank so every time you filled it up it does not click and stop before it overfills, it just overfills and goes all over your paint and the side of your car...pain in the a$$

It's not too hard to drive a stick, the ones that can't are the ones that misshift.

luckily im not one of those :fawk:....however the way u drive can directly affect how the tranny wears....constantly downshifting without rev matching can cause ur synchros to go very quickly

I don't trust consumer reports. I would rather read first hand reports from owners. Forums, to me, are the best place to get information. You generally hear the best and the worst.

How did any Japanese car get a good rating on tranny? Every experience I have had has led to synchro failure at some point (I do mod, and I do race)...

I rev match all the time, I've found that with the Celica all it does is prolong the inevitable.

That's comforting... and here I thought I was circumventing the cause of the problem.

Because they are the minority.

I think Archangel's explanation about the WRX's tranny applies to the Celi's also. Both the WRX's and Celi's trannies are fine for the majority, who don't race and/or mod their cars:

I think Consumer Reports is generally more trustworthy than other car magazines, since they accept no advertising in their pages from any of the manufacturers they review. But then again, you never know about any under-the-table agreements and what not, considering car manufacturers are immensely rich, powerful entities, especially the really big ones like Toyota and GM.
The best thing to do is get info from as many different, reliable sources as possible. Forums are a good alternative source, but keep in mind, they also can't be used as a sole source, since members on a message board aren't necessarily representative of the majority of people who own a certain car. For example, one of the older members here (yakkosmurf) had a buddy who's engine spontaneously caught on fire (yakko's buddy owned a GT-S). It would be short-sighted to assume that this is a widespread problem, even if it was mentioned on a forum.
