My friends GTS makes a weird gurggling noise, sounds like water flowing through a big pipe when you turn the car on. Only for a second. Anybody know whats up ?
thanks

More than likely you need to add a little coolant to the overflow tank (front of engine bay under the trim plastic).
Use red coolant, or just top it off with water.
Checking the coolant hot things look fine, but as the engine cools and the coolant volume contracts, it just sucs a little air into the system.
Mine was gurgling, I added about 2 cups of tap water to the overflow bottle and now the gurgling has stopped.

i get that.. but it comes from the intake pipe... sounds like water flowing.. when started and when turned off.. intake makes that sound..

It's don't think it's intake because, I don't have an intake and It comes from the passengers foot rest area. I also started hearing it when my engine knocking became louder. wtf?

Yeah, that was me. Well, I'm just glad I'm not the only one with that gurgle noise. At least now I know where to look to solve the problem. Thanks NewCelica.org!

It has something to do with switching the temperature with the climate controls. For the first time since I've owned the car I turned the heat on one evening last week. I immediately heard a gurgling noise like water flowing somewhere behind the dash under the glovebox. It stopped a few seconds later.
It must but something related to switching the temperature inputs to heat the interior. I'm not sure how that really works but maybe re-routing some radiator fluid to flow by a heat sink in the air path under the dash sounds likely. I'm sure someone will know.
Just my observations and my $0.02

I get this wierd noise that kinda gurgles when I have my climate controls set to defrost... but when I switch it, it goes away. So you think I just need some coolant scott?

Luni420- I think you need to go out, pop the hood remove te one little trim piece that obscured the coolant expansion tanke and look to see what the level is. If the car is cold (after sitting over night) and the level is below the "MIN" line, then you need to add some.
The gurgling is air in the coolant passages.
The heater for the car uses engien coolant and a heat exchange (heater core). The first tim you se the eat an 6 months, there is no reason to think that you won't have a little gurgling. But you shouldn't hear it every time you start the car and every time you switch on the heat.
The air has 2 ways to get in.
1) the expansion tank. It gets low, the engine cools off and air is sucked in.
2) a leak in the system.
It's that simple. Air in the system doens't help the engine cool so it is bad. If things are working properly, the air will purge very quickly assuming adequate coolant level. I had the gurgling at startup because the coolant was low.

i have the exact same thing!
it didn't do this last winter either though...so i'm guessing something's changed since then, and low coolant levels make sense.
i knew it was air bubbles in the heater core, just not how to fix it.

Please excuse my incredibly bad typing.
While I'm not a spelling genious, I am better than what my posts reflect (just reading mine from this morning). I look back at what I type and am somewhat horrified at how bad it really is. I need to start proofreading, or looking at the screen while I type.

I have the same problem, but my coolent level is near max last time I checked. I'll go check again today. I hope its not a leak somewhere.

If you add water use distilled water, not tap water.

Mine was doing that. When I replaced my belt with the Serpentine belt, I also replaced the Belt Resonator, that eliminated the problem.

I also had the same gurggling noise for months. I can't beleive all it was, "low water". My level was a little below the low mark on the plastic bottle. Thanks everyone.

ha other people have this odd noise too. glad to hear that. i searched not expecting to see a thread. perhaps air in the cooling system huh? perhaps i will massage those hoses more and add coolant as needed.

damn this is old. i guess that if i searched this hard i might have found this.
btw, i topped up my coolant overflow tank and the noise went away. so im happy, ill just have to make sure that i bleed the air out real good when i flush my coolant this weekend.

change or bleed your coolent and it will stop
actually, I'm willing to bet if u just let your car warm up to operating temp w/ the coolent bleeder open the noise will stop. But mine used to do that until I changed my coolent

im pretty sure its a bad water pump, i started hearing it right be4 my 30,000 mi checkup, and w/ my checkup they said they had to replace my water pump, it was covered under warranty so i didnt question anything, but i relized i didnt hear that noice anymore. now that im getting up there in miles im starting to hear it again

Well i have the same gurgling noise near passenger dash as well. (I had recently drained and refilled the coolant because i had to remove the head.) I've been fooling around trying to fix it 2nite. The car was warm, kept hearing the noise, went to bleed some air and boiling coolant happened to find its way everywhere. (i'm 18 and hope thats not something its spose to do lol, i hope i'm not that moronic) I added some distilled water and filled it up more and still same gurgling noise. Any tips on how to get this gurgleness away? My car seems to get pretty hot.

Alright, well played a lil game of hide and go seek with those air bubbles and finally think i purged it all out. Added water, released air, warm up car again, fiddle around with the heater, release air again etc. I guess i'll see if it stays gurgle free till the morning.

idk..i say start the car, take the bleeder valve all the way out and let it idle for 15 mins of so. any air bubbles will come out should come out

Most common problem is too low of a level in the over flow tank. Just put 2 cups of distilled water in there.

Air bubbles in the heater lines.
Turn the heat on turn the car on and make sure there is coolant in the over flow bottle.

Resurrected thread, nevertheless, helpful. My car just started making these noises too. Thanks for the tips.

This is old but helpful, my car has been doing the same. I just hit 15k, but before the car warms up, sometimes even after, I hear a gurgle just when I first ease the gas peddal after stopping. I'll check my coolant today.

^^^^^ Yeah, I get exactly the same thing! At first I though it was just fuel shifting in the tank or the windshield liquid being propulsed to the rear window (I have a rear wiper), but this thread might be the answer.
Let us know if you fix your problem by toping off the coolant. It'll probably be the same for me.

I have the same thing to when I rev my car slowly I hear a water sound. Maybe I'll check my coolant level as well lol.

I had exactly what you described, and it was the coolant. It had air bubbles in the line, that "gurggled" on cold starts.

got this same problem, brought it to the dealership and they bled the system, but i still get it constantly...
