Well, i installed my new blue AEM Gen2 CAI today. :) :) :)
Took about 3.5 hrs to do, was a bit difficult with my TRD body kit. Where the filter sits in front of the wheel well i had to do a fair bit of manicuring to get it to fit, but got it in eventually. Otherwise setup was a breeze. Thanks -EZ- for the tip with the VVC for CCV control, that saved me a bit of time too.
Well, car started first go and idled exactly the same as before the CAI, so that was sweet. Took the car for its first new drive and took it easy below 3500 initially. No sound of the new CAI yet, just the familiar mumble of the TRD exhaust.
Now engine was warm so it was time to boot it, so i did! AND **** ME I NEARLY WET MY PANTS!!!!! 4000rpm to the 8600 cut-out it goes like friggin stink now! Sounds friggin awesome as well. Not your usual high pitch suck sound that comes from turbo'ed filters, but a much deeper moan. I love it.
As for performance, i havent felt any bogging (prolly due to the fact i have a tuned PFC) and power from 4000 rpm onwards has improved markedly! Ill have to get it on the dyno again soon.
Not that ive got anything to compare to but id have to say the TRD exhaust/CAI/PowerFC are a great comb of mods for the 7th gen.
Heres a few pics after the install, ill try get a video together soon to post as well!

Congrats man - im getting more and more tempted to get one.
Only annoying thing is a still have warranty till 160k km. I have 110k on the clock now - Went i bought the car I opted for extended warranty. Im glad i did because my gear box is stuffing up right now. I cant shift super fast from 1-2 now cause it bounces out and down changing 5 - 4 crunches every time when im doing speeds > 60km. :(

-[ez]-

only a lil.. ppl in melb would know how cold it is lately, and it is a lil "boggy" but not enough to worry/complain about... once it's warmed up its good for chirpin to 2nd ;)
Oh my fave thing.... rolling at like 40-50km... in third... just floar it.... and even tho acceleration is slow... the sound is AWESOME!!!

yup, main reason i havent ordered my CAI yet, ive been meaning to speak to the insurance company about exact details relating to modifications :)
do you have the standard warranty or the extended one?
00BlueSX
05-03-2004, 11:48 PM
I have extended.. Got another 50k or 2 years to go. I have done 110k in almost 4 years.
I so would like a CAI - but Toyota can be a bit of a pain to deal with.

BAH Dont worry about the warranty. I'm pretty sure a CAI will not void your warranty. Warranty will only be void if Toyota can prove that the CAI contributed to the fault.

Zcud, no i did not take off the front lip to install the CAI. My lip is a fair bit different to yours though. I had to cut a couple of "sticking out bits" on the inside, but otherwise didnt have to fiddle with it much.
I noticed your post in the Perf forum about the CAI touching the CAI. Ideally it shouldnt, that metal tube (in some 7th's) can be moved out of the way if it is touching the CAI. There is a mounting point just under the radiator which you can bend quite easily to get it out of the way.
My filter rubs on the top with the front lip, but unfortunately cant do anything about it. Top of the filter shouldnt matter though.
No i believe the filter comes pre oiled. I just touched/smelled mine and it was sweet.

Yeh i didnt take off the bumper, it all fit in easily, except for the A/C tube (i think thats what superdaws meant) but my dad carefully bent it a bit lower.
Other than that it was all good.
Oiling the filter?? My friend asked me about that, and the reason y i didnt oil it was coz it was oily to begin with?? so i assumed its already oiled.
TIP: Dont put your mouth in the intake/filter and make "turbo" noises... i nearly choked to death on the foam stuff LOL

Installed mine, yeahh it is still touching the metal host behind it.
So did you end up moving that host?
I try take some pictures and show u later

Yeah, EZ is right, i had another look and it is the A/C hose. Aussie models have a metal pipe, US Spec has a plastic tube from pics.
Just carefully bend it away from your CAI pipe and then no-worries. :)

I manage to put my old CAI plastic tube around the bit where it touches the AC host. should be ok now.
Can finally update my signiture to "Gen2" hehehe
Next up will either be the PowerFc or Tein coilcovers =))
