I had my belt tensioners replaced a recently but the tensioner looks different from stock.

looks like the diameter is 3,4 times bigger.
Did toyota change to parts for the tensioner?

When my mech. changed mine in Feb. he said it was a new design because of so much trouble with the old ones.

Yup, when you get it done now, it's a new design altogether. The arm should be bigger.....longer....blah blah.

Yeah, so to anyone with the old one....you can't buy parts for em any more. Toyota officially doesn't service the original tensioner on '00s and '01s I believe....'00s at least.

good to know but on the paper, it said
"non factory tensioner"
so it made me feel a little uneasy like it's used or since toyota was on back order, they got a non factory part.

the service dude who was an assistant manager at this dealership was a complete jerkoff so I do not want to talk to him. he just acted so cocky when i brougt my car in to get the belt tensioner replaced.
I told him that a lot of celi owners have the tensioner problem and that the belt and the tensioner needed to be replaced. He shut me off immediately saying "all you need to tell me is what sound it's making. Since, you aren't a mechanic, I don't know need to hear from you what u guess it is. Every case is different you can't go by other people's problem."
Anyone else have similar experiences?

Anyone have the part no. so I can match it up to mine.
thanks

I had the same problem. Took it to get it checked I told him it was the tensioner and belt. They checked it, he told me it was ok.
I said bull**** it sounds like a piece of crap soon as it gets moist.
Well anyways my friend is a Toyota tech at another dealership. He checked it out it was a documented bulletin from Toyota, so he printed it for me and I took it to my arrogant dealer and showed him "Fix the freakin thing" It took 3 visits to get it right. They hold back from doing this work because they don't make any money on you, thats a load of crap didnt we all just pay Sh*Tload of money for our cars????

Call David Draper. Refer him to my order and he'll know exactly what you are looking for.

Otherwise, wait until tomorrow and I get the package from David. I'll post the price I got from him and the part number.

funny this thread was brought up, my car went into the shop for a loud belt squeal and they told me I was getting a new tensioner because mine was shot, should have it in by friday.

Are we travelling back in time here? Forgive me if I'm wrong but isn't this belt tensioner thing an old TSB? It's in the TSB forums thanks to GTS-LAID.

If we're talking about a whole new problem please fill me in :P

Naw, there has never been a TSB for the Celica tensioner. There is one for the Corolla that my dealer pointed out to me...which has the same tensioner as our cars.

TSB # EGO15-01

Accessory Drive Belt/Belt Tensioner Assembly Noise
99-02 TMMC Corolla

You however don't need a TSB in order to get this fixed. If you are under warranty, and give the symptoms, they will fix it. A TSB is only to help dealers know now to repair common problems. They already have this procedure down pretty well.

And the part number of the new tensioner for our car is....

16620-22031
$135.91 from David Draper
