good idea about a lightweight enclosure, but horrid results.

That looks like what I have in the back of my car. The only difference is mine is a one-piece sphere and painted body color.

Mine is made from fiberglass, 1/8-3/16" thick. I've had a ton of people tell me how awesome my sub-bass sounds, but we don't know if it's from the sphere enclosure, or the subwoofer.

This is a picture someone took for me at IASCA World Finals:

Sadly, the only thing that is the same in that pic to my current instal is the sphere.

Well, a sphere is theoretically the 'perfect' enclosure....

i would assume it has somehting to do with the fact that the sphere is the shape with the lowest surface area to volume ratio...just a guess

Well, a sphere has no corners. When a box has corners, it creates standing waves. It's similar to aerodynamics, sharp corners are bad. A box has 8 corners and 6 flat sides. The ball has technically no flat sides and no corners. All the sound waves created by the sub reflect off the sphere's walls, and don't get sucked into the corner. Some people say a sphere is the worse design, but then why does a large company like B&W speakers have a product line with spherical enclosures?

BTW, rumor also says spherical enclosures is best suited for mid-range and mid-bass, and that it won't do anything for sub-bass. I think it's BS. :)

i personally think that having a big sphere in my trunk is unsightly. not that my gigantic box is any better :P but i would try to atleast get it down in the spare tire area or something.

Oh, I totally agree. It's not the sexiest thing in the world. And I refuse to take my spare out of my car. Fix-a-flat does jack $hit on a Sunday 800 miles from home. That box is only in there for show. It's different, and gets people's attention. I think it's impressive seeing a painted, round ball in the back of a car. This will be the last year for the ball, though. I don't like to have the same system for more than one competition season.
