welp as Im sure most of you have noticed that the site had another one of its fits and was down for the last 3 days.. To make a long story short Thu morning the server that the site resided on took a dump and the local tech people are retarded and say there is nothing wrong with it.. Well obviously there was something wrong with it, they rebooted the box and it wouldnt even boot up. Anyhow thanks to Russ we are now back online on one of his boxes and Im not sure if this is a permanent or temporary thing (it all depends) but in the meantime thankyou Russ for getting us back online..

Also you may have noticed that posts were lost.. I had a backup file of the forums database from 1 day prior to the site going down so I know we lost alot of posts over the one day and I apologize but this is the best I can come up with for now..

I must say... after trying to do stuff on the other box, it is officially FSCKED! or.. for you unix nerds.... it's not fscked, and needs to be fscked badly!
anyways... i'm hoping this doesn't throw a red flag up on bandwidth utilisation on my box, but i guess we'll find out...

*keeps fingers crossed*

some specs on the new somewhat temporary (depending on who notices at work) home

server - compaq proliant 1850R - dual PIII 550, 2GB ECC ram, 2 10GB U2W 10,000RPM scsi drives
100mb to the dual ring OC48 network, multiple providers, 55 degrees, redundant power :)

i can't wait to finally use some cpu cycles on this box :) lol

hey Larry you do an awesome job as newcelica.org God but can't think of the most obvious solution - post a big fat ass note at the main page of course !! doh...

something to the effect of :
hi, forum is back on temporarily space - please click here to join the most dynamic Celica discussion board on Earth !!

my two cents

well... nothing can be done at the old site.... you try and edit a file, either the program is missing, or it can't write the file to disk... sucks major ass... otherwise, newcelica.org would have a redirect to here... so for now, we just gotta wait till dns gets moved.

I don't know anything about web site hosting or the complications of working with thousands of users at once, but is this something that could be resolved by spending more money for increased bandwidth or bigger hard drives?

Maybe this has been discussed before, but what about making NCO a paid membership site? So many people seem to like the site and the way it is run when it is working that it might work. What if the site charged say $5/year. With 1000 paid members, wouldn't that cover all the current expenses and thensome?

Or maybe the NCO administrators could hold pledge drives and membership wouldn't have to be mandatory, but would come with incentives like discounts or other offers as National Public Radio stations do to raise money. Or maybe $$$ is not the problem.

Anyone have comments?

IMO, it's not just that it's expensive, but it's expensive every month, esp. if you're in a managed services environment.

The good thing about that, is that the company will work with you to fix/resolve problems, cuz that's part of what you pay for.

At my work, great.. no prob... we keep our customers cuz we provide good support.... in larry's case w/the last server, they screwed it up, then wanted to charge him more to fix it.... even though they broke it, which, IMO, is really jacked....

But, he was gettin a deal, you get what you pay for, etc, etc....

but yeah... if there were more sponsors, then i'd twist larry's arm to become a customer of my work, but I'd imagine the monthly reoccuring would be around $400+ due to bandwidth

as Russ explained it very well.. its not that it costs soo much (well kinda 400 a month is alot of $$) its the fact that you have to come up with that month to month to month which is a pain to do.. Anyhow thanks to Russ for getting us back up and running and hopefully we can figure something out :)

sweet, good job Larry and Russ. If you need a DNS server let me know. I can forward your domain name to Russ's server if you need to.

Hey, it's back :D :D

I used my regular link to get here, so whatever you were doing must have worked. My link goes directly to my user cp menu and logs me in. It all worked fine just like normal.

i haven't touched the dns in days... maybe you were switching between 2 dns servers, 1 w/cached old record, one without?

03-20-2002, 10:11 AM
My old route still doesn't work?

00CericaRuss

oldster..go to a command prompt and type "ping newcelica.org"
if you get a 209.x.x.x , your dns hasn't changed yet
