View Full Version : Getting a new transmission fromToyota

Took the car to the dealer today becauase when I let off the gas and the RPM goes down, the transmission makes a low grumbling noise in the lower RPM's. Maybe some bad bearings (sp?)?
They called and said I am getting a new transmission. Do you think this sounds like something where I should ask them to put in synthetic transmission fluid while they are at it? Would it have helped in this case?
BTW, this is on my 2003 GT-S. What do you think would cause this? Shifting at high RPM?

The car was designed to shift at high RPMs...that's why you've got the second profile...Toyota wouldn't have created it if they didn't intend people to use it.
It might be simply a case of a lemon tranny, not enough tranny fluid, or possibly even a few too many burnouts...either way, it's completly unknown what caused the problem unless it's been looked over. You should ask them what they think caused the problem?
The Celica tranny isn't exactly built to handle high amounts of HP but I see no reason why it cannot sustain itself under heavy driving at the stock HP levels.
The reason I say burnouts, is because I tried to do a burnout (first time and was completly clueless about it), and burned it way too long, so much as to the point the car was dragging itself forward even with the e-brake on. I had a noticeable droning sound ever (same as you) since I did that, but never had my tranny fail.

The dealer says that they do not open the trannies to inspect them when there is a problem. They just replace them and send the broken one back to corporate to inspect. Because of this, they say that they can not tell much about what is actually broken inside.
The tranny did not really fail (yet?). I just brought it in because of the sound it made. I never did a burn out before in the car. I did try to land lift on the 1-2 shift a dozen or so times, and 90% of the time I failed and landed at 5800. That's about it. That is the only thing I can think of that might have screwed it up. But like you said, the car was made to shift at high RPM's, so maybe it was just a lemon tranny. Nothing that a better fluid would have helped?

I'd say bad tranny too.

I had exactly the same problem which only made noise during 4th and 5th gear. Toyota opened my transmission and found that the main bearing were broken. (They showed me and it felt like the main bearing had a rough feel instead of a smooth feel)
Anyways, they didn't give me a new tranny but just replaced the main bearings. Ever since then, no problems.

Mine's getting replaced right now too...
It started makin' noise when decellerating, then the noise was there all the time in every gear. Sounded like a spun bearing to me. When "Quartz" owned the car before me they changed out the tranny @ 15,000, now it has 28,000 and they are doing it again...??? I don't know how he used to drive the car, but when I bought it the front tires were bald and the rears were not.
They started to take it apart and didn't see any excessive wear, so they said,"screw it just put a new one in" no charge to me , no hassle, nothing. Crown Toyota seems really cool, it's my first experience there. So now I have a new motor and trans!

Bad news. They swapped the tranny, and the grumbling noise is still there when decelerating. They are going to look at it some more on Monday :(
Where else could I point them if it isn't the tranny itself making the noise?

...don't say that!!!! I hope the swap fixes what we were hearing. I took the shop forman for a ride in mine, and he has 20+ years of experience. We both agreed it sounded like a bad bearing in the trans...???
Good luck?

Had the same thing happen to my 03 corolla. Last weekend I went to Indy for the 500. I noticed on the way there my tranny would make a strange grumbling noise whenever i would let off the gas. It only happened in second gear though. My car has 43k miles on it. On the way home i was driving down the highway in 5th gear and i hear a loud "clunk" then constant grinding. i pulled off at the next exit and the car wouldn't shift into any gear. I was in the middle of the boonies, no gas station, no nothing. I waited about 10 minutes and tried to put it in gear and it noisily shifted. I drove 50 loud miles to the dealership i go to. They replaced the entire transmission under warranty, and even installed my TRD Japan clutch and clutch cover at no charge. When i picked up my car i asked the tech what could cause that, and he gave me the whole " these trannies are bulletproof" He claimed it is usually caused by a mis-shift. I have never mis-shifted..........well at least not into a lower gear, i think one time i accidentally shifted from 1st to 4th.........but it was obvious that he thought it was my fault.......ASS.

The forman took a ride in my car and tried to tell me that the noise was normal gear whine, and that the sound was much worse when i first brought it in. I told him that he should go test drive a new 6 speed GT-S and listen to the difference. He did that, and they had to ask Toyota for an outside opinion after he realized that my car was making a lot more noise. So now they are going to look into the clutch assembly and see what might be worn out there.
Off Topic: I test drove a stock '04 6 speed to compare the sound. It revs and shifts very smoothly down low compared to my car with the AEM CAI. Also the stock suspension seems so smooth and linear compared to my H&R springs with AGX shocks set to 3 all around (feels kinda clunky when going over bumps or out of drive ways). *sigh*

Finally fixed, and my car shifts smoothly again with no grumbling noise when i let off the gas! They replaced the clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing. I don't know enough about these parts to say if they were BS'ing me on the cause. They said that a spring was missing from the pressure plate. ???

Picking mine up tomorrow. I had them put a new cluch in since it was apart anyway.
Did they charge you for the clutch assembly?

Free of charge. Does what they say happened make any sense? They had to call the manufacturer, and took a couple days. They also forgot to hook back up the reverse beep warning at first.

Jeez!
Not sure if that would make noise...??? I had to pay 231.00 for my clutch, but the new tranny was free/warranty. Not used to the clutch grabbing right off the floor and I chug it sometimes LOL! But all seems ok now, no more noise.
