this should probably go in the Audio forum, but nobody ever goes there. I installed my Sony XM receiver...I bought the one with the car kit for portability. I also bought the home kit so I can listen to it indoors. Like a hundred something channels, and I listen to dance, hip hop, and like top 10 stuff, so this is perfect...anyways, I'm very happy with it, except for the car antenna, the thing is huge! Oh yeah and the price...like 525 with a 4 year warranty from Best Buy...Oh well, I'm happy with it!

XM radio will go the way of DIVX DVDs. Even if cost was not an issue, here is what XM radio can not solve.
You can't hear what you want when you want. I use to have an MP3 player with a few hundred songs in the car and was always pissed I could not find the song I felt like hearing at that moment. This is why I prefer CDs.
MP3s can do the same thing and there is no monthly charge. MP3s are even more customizable. You pick the songs you want. Don't like the song? Hit next. Like the song, hit repeat. My .02

All these arguements against it, here's one for it. You may here something you've never heard before, and really like it. Turning on the radio is easier and more convinient that doing MP3s, or picking out CDs. CDs scratch.

I don't think it will last. I'm not against it, but I don't think the idea of paying for radio will work long, unless you can actually pick the individual songs that you want to play. It's not enough to just give me 1000 different channels that play the same type of music. I'm picky. So I burn CD-R's of the songs I like. I wouldn't use XM if you gave it to me.

People pay for TV. The basic stations were free, people wanted more choice, out came cable, then Satellite.
I would get it if the unit weren't so friggin expensive. Especially around here since the radio stations suck balls. Not one decent classic rock station.

okay check it out....boeing will eventually use the xm satellites in their commercial liners, they just invested 500 million bucks into the system. they expected 15,000 subscribers when it came out, they had 33,000. there are only 30+ commercial free channels, but I have yet to hear one commercial on any of the 120 that I have. It's not like I can't still burn cds (or buy for that matter) and listen to a particular song. XM just exposes me to stuff that I would have had to research to download. Plus no high speed connection at my house = no downloading. Have to use school. What if I didn't go to school? There's 30-40 bucks a month for Cable, DSL whatever. Plus the home kit is the sheeeit...It was the most plug and play piece of audio equipment I've used.

I agree. I'm too used to my in dash MD decks. I can travel with a small assortment of all the songs I want to hear. Then I can pull them up when I want to listen to them. I've had MD for about 5 years now. It's the best portable format still in my opinion. I've listened to MP3s made on the latest encoders at 128kb/s and they still don't sound as good as the recordings made on my MD deck. I had looked at XM, but I think it's going to be step backwards for me.

hell yeah, indash minidisc(of course it's got a cd slot too just in case :))
MD records cd quality, over and over, not scratchable and once named on the minidisc any other player will read it out...
i've had them for over two years and i dont understand why they aren't more popular

The recording is harder coz it's real time recording... CD u can just burn in 4 mins... I used to have MD but sold it off... CD burning is much more efficient... I used to have only 28.8kbps modem, but still manage to get songs i want... Now with cable... I d/l movies =)

I think it's a sh*tty idea from a consumer standpoint...having to buy a radio then pay $10/month to listen to it...when I can simply download stuff of WinMX/Kazaa and burn it at home. Besides, no radio station could ever play all the stuff I listen too.

yeah, the sony antenna looks like the first pic...they said you had to mount it on the body, but it looked like a shark fin. I tried it in the rear deck and it looks good there and very unnoticeable. And that hat was given to me by a friend of mine at a rave one night. People say I have a resemblance to Felix the Cat, hence Felix is on the front. By the way, if you wanted to mount the antenna outside, it can be painted and matched to body color without any loss of reception as long as you don't use metallic flake or anything with metal in it. Also, all the wires are hidden, so it looks pretty professional if I do say so myself. Here is a pic of the unit up close.

i actually had an idea a while back before satelite radio but you could upload music to a server in mp3 and wav form and you could access your stuff through your head unit...kinda like XM did but with your own sheite!

hmm... you're right again. It's just kinda obvious cause he would have reason to have it and what do you know, there's one in the pic! then he has a nice little link in his sig that takes you to his pics and mod list, which has a FMIC listed
besides, dont get mad, i was just messing with you :p
