well i bought 2 cans of engine brite from kragens. and this is how it came out:

my engine bay use to be very dirty but for 4 bux... it did the charm. =D i took off my hood also so that it gets direct light to dry off also.

I should start cleaning my engine too. I never cleaned it in the 3+ years I had my car.

You should cover the alternator and any air intake passeges that might get this stuff in them, aside from that just spray away!

For what it's worth, Ive done this a number of times without any ill effects. Just cover up the stuff you're supposed to cover up and let it dry off for 30 mins when you're done.

i looked at the direction/warnings.. disposal on the ground is prohibited. disposal into the sewer line may be prohibited. cover this. cover that. yikes!

all i did was cover the alternator w/ a plastic bag. And spared the parts that were very dirty.

all it took was a little meguiars endurance gloss and nxt wax....and it turned out great

Here's mine, cleaned the plastics with Armour-all, but didn't go to crazy on the rest.

dont do it yourself...u have to go to a professional place that does that ****...cuz u could **** up ur engine pretty bad when u clean it..
who cares about that leave it alone. its not like u drive with ur hood popped open
