looking at putting a set of Enkei Rs-E 17" wheels on my GT-S, but the RS-E offset is 40. Is that gonna work?

Yeh, i know this is a "Wheel and tire forum" Question, but when was the last time you saw someone in there???

thanks crew,
mj

offset of the GTS wheels is 39mm, your 40mm offset will probably be fine.

PS: I would have answered this in the wheel and tire forum if it was posted there.

34mm offset will move the center of your wheel 5mm outboard.

offset is the distance between the centerline of your wheel and the mounting surface.

if you go down from the OEM measurement of 39mm, you'll move the centerline of your wheel away from the center of the car (outboard) a distance equal to the change in offset. if the wheel is wider than the oem 6.5", the outside edge of your wheel will move outboard a distance equal to the change in offset plus half the change in width. the inside edge will move outboard a distance equal to the change in offset minus half the change in width (i.e. if you change the width a lot and the offset only a little, it will actually move inboard).

if you increase offset, the opposite will happen. centerline inboard equal to offset change. inside edge inboard offset change plus half of width change. outside edge inboard offset minus half of width change.

did i make things worse or better?

is 34 bad? I don't know if I'd say "bad," but I personally would try to stay as close to 39 as possible...5mm is less than 1/4", so probably no biggie. If I were going to put a 7.5 or 8" rim on, I'd probably want 35mm or so to make sure no rubbing happened on the inside of the wheel. I'd certainly be more comfortable with 34 than with 45+.

The wheels are 39mm offset for a reason...there's suspension geometry stuff going on that likes the the center of the contact patch to be where 39mm puts it.
