has anyone tried putting an lcd where the stock head unit is and custom mounting an aftermarket head unit in the compartment above the stock head unit? i've seen the jdm replacement pieces, but i think it would look nice to put an lcd inplace of the stock head unit and mount an aftermarket head unit somewhere else. if anyone has done anything like this i'd really love to see some pics.

I haven't done this myself, but if you do a search there are several members who have done custom work on their consoles.

everything i saw was either that jdm replacement piece or a headunit with a retrackable screen...

just wonderin if anyone has thrown a screen where the stock head unit is and put their aftermarket head unit elsewhere...

I have my 1-DIN radio and a set of gauges in the factory CD place, and I molded my LCD and a center channel into the remaining center console. I'll try to take a picture of it tonight.

I've been thinking about ditching a radio altogether and going with an lcd mounted in that radio spot and hide a pc somewhere else in the car. PC could then do gps, mp3's of a hard drive, dvds, mpeg 2/4s, vcds, could put an fm receiver in there if i wanted to have the fm option, and could probably get an xm or sirus receive worked in there somehwere.. it's all just a matter of 'what items' and 'how much i want to spend'.

It's just too easy to dump a whole ****load of money into this kind of stuff :P

a buddy of mine did that in his wrx. its an awesome setup. the wrx has a similarly sized stock head unit as the celica. he basically threw an lcd there and hooked up a laptop to it from the trunk. then he got a small wireless keyboard and mouse that fit in the glove compartment. he did still have a reciever setup higher on the dash (where the clock is on the stock wrx). if i put a lcd in my celica i'd probably set it up with a comp.

yeah, I'd actually like to find a head unit that's JUST an fm receiver that's high quality, perferably cool lookin, that has auxiliary inputs and preamps. Seems like no one has ever thought about making those, cause i'm sure there's not much market for them, but one of those would be perfect for what I'd like to do. Would make speakers a bit easier to manage, but I could get the same job done with an amplifier and a crossover, just less room to take up if it's all in one headunit.
