The rod might have come out of the pivot ball.

I know with the 02+ shift gates, the shifter leans a bit more to the right, but I doubt it would be that far. Shifting into 6th would come very close to hitting the passenger's leg.Originally posted by WHITECELICAGTS

The rod might have come out of the pivot ball. That's possible, but the car would be very hard to shift with a loose rod, and it would be very obvious that there was something wrong. Besides, the rod is held in sooo incredibly tight. The only thing that can move it is a press (or a sledgehammer ;) ).

He never mis-shifted.

It always engages great when he shifts hard.

I never seen a celica like this and i thought i would question it.

I know I KNOW :)

1st look in the engine bay under your battery. You will see the 2 shifter cables are connected to a holder (on the tranny) with 2 clips. One of those cables must not be clipped in correctly.

Also if thats not it then look and see if the shifter cables are connected to the shifter base. Also with the same clips.

hope that helps.

well, there are two return springs that keep your shifter in the middle, right? so maybe one of your return springs popped out? so only one of them is currently acting on it. that would make sense. so your shifting is still fine because those return springs don't affect shifting, they just keep your stick in the middle during neutral.

I have actually seen this before on a different car.

This as I heard it explained was one of the temporary solutions that Toyota made for the misshifting problem. It was an attempt to keep the shifter to the right to prevent a misshift into a lower gear.

It seemed weird but it had no ill effects on driving or for the driver.
