View Full Version : changing brake pads?
is there anything I need to know before I attempt this myself? I've never changed 'em on the Celica before.

be careful of the 3 retaining springs on the front pad assembly. I lsot one, and it took me about 15 min to find it again.
Make sure you use backing compound (?) to keep the brakes from squealing. I didn't, and I pay for it every day...

If you have previously topped off the fluid in the master cylinder then it will overflow when you put the new, thicker pads in. Brake fluid pretty well destrys paint, so if this happens wipe up the mess and clean with water (take care not to get water into the fluid).
A turkey baster works nicely for removing fluid before it overflows.

also while you're at it drain your fluid and bleed your lines... its really easy but time consuming if you're actually taking off the wheels.
Thanks, guys. Is there a write-up on this somewhere? I'm just not sure on how to get the calipers off.
New SS lines are coming next week, and am picking up fluid on Saturday. Speedbleeders should be here today.
I'll probably just wait until I get everything here, then take a few hours & do it all at once.

The calipers are real easy to get off. Just two bolts from the back side for both front and back if I remember right.

yup just like clone said... i think they're technically considered pins though arent they.. cause they dont have a backside attachment...
Make sure almost all the slack in the front lines is pulled through the strut mounted brake line holders towards the back of the car or you may have problems with them catching on the ABS line bracket and chafing on the sway bar links.
My solution to the chafing problem was to fit a piece of 1/2" diameter plastic tubing over the sway bar links. So far it's working perfectly.
The pic basically shows how the lines should be positioned when you're done. You can see where the lines had been rubbing in my car and the plastic tube fit over the sway bar link to prevent future problems.

gotcha. so, i should route them to look just like they do in that pic?
if i don't have ABS, will i still have the bracket?
got my speedbleeders today, brake fluid yesterday... still waiting on the lines. Should be here tomorrow.
ace3: yeah, once you get the wheel off you'll see that all the slack is needed on the left side of the strut. I doubt you'll have the bracket w/o ABS because that part of the ABS system is grouped together with the lines and sensor by Toyota. I think the plastic tube trick is a good preventative measure even if it doesn't seem to rub at first. It's hard to tell when the car is on jackstands where the lines will end up when the car is on the road. Besides, it cost like 50
