I am in the market for a new car and I have my eye on a Celica. I am interested in upgrading whatever car I get to possibly a turbo. What is needed to upgrade a Celica? What other upgrades will I need? Can the engine really handle it? What kind of turbo should I get? I need all the information that I can get so please just fill me in with anything that you know of. I also need to know which can handle the turbo better: GTS or GT. Thanks a lot.

Currently you can only get turbo for a GT. Hopefully soon something will be out for the GTS but it will probably be expensive. If you want turbo buy a WRX!!!! That's what I'm droolin over. Check out the forced induction forum.

I like the WRX's but the only thing that turns my head away is that it's a four door. I also am not hip on the hood design. That can always be changed but the 4-doors kill!!

How much would the GT-S turbo cost?? What mods do you have to do to the engine along with the turbo? Would it be more reasonable to get a GT and put a turbo in that? Do you know how much the turbo for the GT costs? Thanks.

i'm so into turbos right now that I"m just gonna sell the celica as soon as humanly possible....my next baby will be either a VR4 if I can afford the insurance, otherwise a 2g GSX...

Are there any other mods needed for the engine to handle the turbo? Would it be more reasonable to put a turbo on a GT? What the price of a GT turbo?

custom forged pistons....might as well get rods too....valves....this sh*t is very expensive and I personally dont see any worth in converting a factory N/A car to turbo

On a GT with no engine work you'll be able to push between 200 and 240 Crank HP. thats around 6-7psi. If you plan running any higher than that get some serious engine work done. BTW 240 HP in the celica is about the same power to weight ratio as a supra twin turbo. :)

Of course, Marky doesn't see any worth in upgrading from Atari 2600, so you have to take that with a grain of salt :D

If you want to turbo a car, the GT is going to be the most cost effective option. You might as well get a used one, since the warranty will go out the window with a turbocharger attached.

The GT-S could be turbocharged, but you would have to replace the pistons and rods, you should insert a block guard, and should seal the deck of the block (all expensive!).

There is a company that is planning on releasing prepped 2ZZ engine blocks, which would save you the time and trouble of doing the above mentioned things, but would still cost $3000 to $3500. Toss in about $3500 for a turbo kit, and $1000 labor, and you've got yourself a really nice TT Supra. :)

Actually, to be fair, that really would let you have about 300hp or so, which would make the car totally incredible....but that is a huge investment.

So get a GT, preferably used, and put the turbo kit on. You'll have enough extra money at the end to do wheels, suspension, brakes...whatever you want.

Hope this helps,
David

With the exception of getting lower compression pistons, wouldn't you have to do this stuff to a GT also? The 1zz is also an open-deck engine with cylinder walls and rods not made for high boost, right?

all depending how much boost you want to run

The "izzy" seems to just be more boost friendly all-in-all. The spyder guys are pushing 300hp with it without a problem. Both engines are open deck. The debate on Spyderchat right now is that... the 2ZZGE with a supercharger is AWESOME and the "izzy" with a Turbocharger is AWESOME. The GTS can get boosted, it would just take a lot more time and money. With the money you would put into get it boost "happy" you could buy the Trial 3ZZGE
"izzy - 2ZZ hybrid" kit and get 2.0L high revving 240hp N/A car.

Just my 2 cents. Who wants to deposit more :)

There are 2 guys on spyderchat that are aiming for about 400hp. One of them is hoping to run 25psi with lower comp pistons.

"Open deck" is not a term I'm familiar with, what does it mean? Thanks
