View Full Version : 98 octane PFC tune

Hey guys,
I'm from Australia and I'm after a good tune for my PFC. I love the idea of the MWR maps as a base, but our fuel here is 98octane. I currently have a TRD jap spec exhaust, PFC, AEM 2 CAI and I may get DC Headers. I can get a local tune but I'm not confident that they will get the most power out of it, as gen 7 Celica tunes/mods are rare in Oz.

get the datalogit and learn how to tune it yourself. thats really the only other way if you cant get a shop to tune it for you.

Lucky, I know thats what you did and you have produced awesome results. Isn't it a bit risky doing it yourself? If you lean the engine out too much or shift the timing too much, won't it cause major damage? I'd like to get it tuned on a dyno to proove gains.

as long at you keep your air fuel mixtures good, and there is no knock then you will be fine....Just watch your CEL, when it flashes, back off and change back to your previous setup...

Feedback from Lucky and Smaay! just what I was after. Could you guys give me a quick tutorial on air/fuel mixing??? And what exactly is knock?

you always should tune on the dyno :) that way you know if what you are doing works lol by doing it yoursefl you just bypass paying the tech to push the buttons. most techs wont know any more about the celica then you will lol at least thats what we noticed.
on the datalogit you have the ability to add or remove fuel. when you get your A/F ratio start at the lower rpms and work your way up.
if you are running rich you will see a dip and a lower number like 11.8 or worse. to correct this you remove fuel until you get your desired #. we have ours at 13.0 (this info is for the N/A celicas)
if you see too high of a # like anything over 14 you are running lean. - to fix this you add fuel til you hit your goal.

^^ the bottom graph shows what mine is at. one at 13's and one for 14.

this one shows a lean vs a rich A/F notice the spikes and dips compared to the first dyno which we tuned the A/F flat :)

Knock is detonation. Its basically when the mixture of gas and fuel ignite before the spark plug fires or burns too fast. this beats the crap out of your pistons. look at this piston...This wasnt caused by detonation but the effects are similar.

when you do a pull on the dyno, get your A/F line straight like Lucky317's, then start playing with the VVT map...change an RPM range by 5 degrees and see the change...if your CEL flashes fast, back off!!! thats a warning sign of detonation...change to your IGN map and take out a little timing and maybe add fuel to the Base map...just keep making small changes till you get a perfect tune..it takes patients but once you get teh hang of it, things fall together...good luck

Thanks for that guys, great info. I'll let you know how I do.
BTW I know a few guys here with modded Celica's. Best number on the dyno was 120killowatts. As you probably know we use the metric system. I've tried to convert your numbers ie hp into kw, to make a comparison but the numbers don't seem to add up???

120 kilowatts = 160.9 HP

Yeah thats what I got too! and coincidently I use onlineconversion.com as well. But a stock Jap Spec Celica is claimed to produce 140kw at the flywheel. Dynos have reveal that they produce between 90-95kw at the wheels. That equates to about 120hp with 98octane fuel! and yes it is VTLI???
US Celicas produce 150+ hp stock right.

WTF??? 98 Octane and they only get 120HP with VVTL-i??? That is lower than U.S. 91 Octane stock. I think something is wrong on that JDM dyno man.

lol, I don't think there is anything wrong, I think it's just that our dynos measure power differently.
One way to look at it is that you guys eg Lucky, are making more power at the wheels 180hp+ than stock flywheel hp.... right?

Most of the world measures octane differently than the US. I'd expect Austalia 98 octane is 98 RON (Research Octane Number). Which only equals about 93 at a US pump.

Ahha! Correct. Our fuel is specified as 98RON. I suppose thats good news in a way. The MWR maps should suit my application.
...Still damned confused with the kw/hp numbers!
