Please make this a sticky, my wonderful Mod friends Eric and Jim!
WHEN: Show up at 11 AM Saturday (April 13th). We will wait for stragglers and leave promptly at 11:30.
WHERE: Meet at Taco Bell (4418 CHANTILLY PLACE CHANTILLY VA, 20151) at the Capital Expo Center
( http://www.capital-expo.com/directions.html )
1) Get to Rt. 28 (Sully Rd) from wherever you are coming from (Rt. 50, 66, etc.)
2) Go South on Rt 28 (from 50 or the toll rd) or North (from 66).
3) Turn onto Willard Rd (east)
4) Go about 200 yards and turn left at the gas station (Mobil?).
5) You can't miss Taco Bell, there are like 20 restaurancts around it like Applebee's and McDonald's. Look for tons of nice cars....
WHAT: We're going to hit Skyline Drive from Rt. 66, plan on around 200 miles roundtrip. For those who are interested after the drive. I imagine we will be all done by 3:30 or 4 PM at the latest.
BRING: Digital cameras, video cameras, Motorola Talkabouts (or equivalent), and GASOLINE (fill up before the meet). Remember to charge your batteries for all of the above devices. Po-Po warning devices optional.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS: APRIL 13th!

Is this just a "scenic" drive, or is it supposed to be a spirited, enjoy the Celica handling drive? I don't think Skyline Dr would not be a good place to do thspirited drive, scenic, it's perfect. It's usually fairly crowded, you have to pay, and there is always someone on the road going below the already low speed limit, slowing everyone else down.
Just thinking "aloud".
XYRCNCP
03-22-2002, 10:06 AM
we could drive up to Skyline and just "meet" but I guess that would be considered scenic........where can you do spirited driving in VA though? w/o too much risk of the cops messin with ya?

I don't know exactly. I would say anywhere in the farmlands down a little south you would be alright. There are some good roads in the farmy areas around here, which is a better than the woods because you can actually see a little bit ahead.
The Spyder people did it up in Maryland last weekend. I don't know how fast and crazy they drove, or how backwoods the roads were that they took, but they didn't have any problems.
I guess, if you want to have a fun drive, you will have to drive out of the way a bit, but that's what you are planning anyway; it's not like Skyline is right around the block.

true, I mean the last time I went to Skyline there was barely any traffic.....
200 miles in one day though.......hmmmm...

When we went to the long island meet, I put 600 miles on my car in 2 days!

Yeah guys, Come on up here!!!!!!!!!
I live less than 2 miles from the entrance to Skyline Drive, so I think I'll just meet you here. Skyline Drive is not very crowded this time of year, but you do have a pretty low speed limit. There are some great country back-roads w/ good combinations of tight turns, open straights, and beautiful scenery( farms & GW National Forest) OH! and best of all>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>very few cops!!!
Just let me know what you wanna do. I grew up around here, so I know alot of roads, sights, etc.
I also want to see you MD guys & gals showing up. If I can drive from here to Arundel Mills, you can make it from there to here!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude I'm sure that the DTM guys would rather do the windy back roads rather than the scenic views so let me talk to my DTM friend and ask him what he thinks. Also where would you want us to meet you? I have never been up there so you pick.

Jake, How long a trip do you wanna take? 2,3hrs? That way I can plan a route and wind us back to approx. where we started. I'm sure you'll wanna stop at some points along the way.
Here's where we can meet: Take I-66 west to the 2nd Front Royal exit(i forget what exit # it is but i'll get it) At the end of exit ramp turn left at the light. Go about a quarter mile and park & ride is on left across from McDonald's. I'll meet you there. I just want to warn you guys, some of these roads will have very steep drop-offs over the shoulders! There will also be a hairpin turn or two that you will almost have to come to a complete stop to make. So, drive what you can handle.

03-23-2002, 05:57 PM
I'm not sure of the exit number either, but it's a low number, like 10 or less. Anyway it's route 522 and you want to make a left (south) just like skreemin said.
If I tag along I will meet you at the park and ride, because it is about 10-15 minutes from my house. :)

What's DTM?

03-25-2002, 08:24 PM
Yeah, Jake. Why are you calling this a DTM drive-about? What is DTM? Is this different from DCM? Is anyone from the club welcome to this on 4/13? If so, let's get an idea of how many might be coming. Kinda would like to know just how long a train we'll be pullin'!!!!!!!
Oh, and are we gonna have to slow down every coupla miles to let the GT's catch up?LOL

It's a BMW car club around this area. I think.
Hi guys,
I'm JD. The DTM drive is open to friendly people :). Not only BMW. I, myself, dont drive a BMW. I've been to a few drives w/ DTM. And they are cool. I used to drive a Celica, and that's why I invited DCM to join the drive. I know how good Celicas are on the twisties.
For the guy w/ white lightning, (sorry dunno your name) please show up. The guy who organizes this drive doesnt even drive a BMW. He drives a Lightning.
Gather some definites, so I can let my friend, Ben, knows how many cars are coming to meet us at Expo.
Please bring motorola talkabouts, because we don't want to lose people on the rt.66.

Actually, I could lead them from Front Royal to Luray via the windy back roads, then get on Skyline Drive at the Luray entrance & take it back to Front Royal.

Thanks JD(32). Man, I didn't know this was a BMW club event. When Jake put "DTM" at the start of this thread, I thought his typing skills were a bit rusty and he meant "DCM".
Oh, well, the more the merrier! JD,Are you coming? What do you drive?
Which windy back road? give me a layout map? btw, where in front royal do you live? i used to go to RMA. BTW, I drive an SLK. If you have ICQ, or AIM. Please contact me there..

I'm there! Gotta represent the Lightnings. :D

Sorry, not gonna drive an hour east, just to turn around and drive an hour west. I do that everyday to work.
I'll drive around for awhile once you guys come up this way. I'm gonna meet you guys in Front Royal.

I was thinkin about going west on Rt.55 to the Front Royal airport road, take that to Rt.619,take that to Rt.678(Fort Valley Rd) then take that to King's Crossing, make a right towards Edinburg, stopping there for a break, then turn back around and take that last road past King's Crossing, over the other mountain to Luray.
At Luray, enter Skyline Drive and take that to Front Royal. I'll get a map printed up. The only problem could be Trout season. I have to find out when Trout season opens up, because one of VA's best trout streams(Passage Creek) runs the entire length of Fort Valley & for the first few weeks there's alot of parked cars alongside the road, campers everywhere & worst of all>>>>>

Oh, and I live in town up by the radio station.

Hey XYR, you live in Stephens City? What do you drive to work? I've probably seen you a thousand times! I also drive an hr. east down I-66 every day. Your trip to work sounds like mine! Into the sun in the AM & into the sun in the PM.

I live in Winchester. I'd love to be able to drive down I66 because of the 2 lanes and higher speed limit. Unfortunately I live near I81 and 50 and I work right off of Route 50 in Chantilly. So guess what? I get to drive an hour+ thru about 4-5 little towns with 25MPH speed limits and an occasional place to pass someone. It really sucks but it would take me 15-20 minutes longer to get to work via either I66 or Route 7. So I've never seen you on I66 but we're heading the same direction every morning I guess. ;)
I don't get into Front Royal much, but my sister lives there now. I bought an MR2 s/c there once too. :D

I hit 50 at Gilbert's Corner and just take it to 606 cause our shop is right off that before you get to 28. So. it's possible I could seen ya thru that short stretch.
My brother goes all the way down 50 from Waterloo. He's either in a 2001 red eclipse w/blackened-out roof & rear spoiler or he's on his 2002 chromed-out Harley deuce. Damn! He's got too much money!he he he

HEY EVERYBODY!!!!! I just found out that Trout fishing season starts April 6th, so I think the drive-about is gonna have to stick with its original plan for Skyline Drive. Traffic is just much too congested on the routes I had planned.
So, Jake, tell the DTM guys just to go with Skyline Drive plan, and maybe we'll do the other a little later.

skreemin -- the only Celica I usually see is a white one. I hit 50/15 at between 6:30 and 6:45 usually. Too f'in early if you ask me. ;)

I'm a little iffy on this now, but I'm probably still in. The Mustang guys are renting the Hagerstown dragway the 13th and are allowing the Lightnings to join them. Not sure if I'll go or not. I probably won't. I'll probably join you guys.
a few days away... still as scheduled...
invest a lil money on motorola talkabouts or other frs radios. don't forget to fill up your gas.
and for peepz joining us down front royal. we r planning on getting out of 66 at exit 13. there r 2 gas stations. we r gonna stop at the mobil gas station (i believe it's mobil) but anyhow, its the one on the right hand side when going toward front royal.
so.. how about headcounts from this crowd? it's nice to know how many cars are coming...
oh yeah.. bring some money.. i think it costs $10 to get in the skyline drive... i'm not sure tho.. can anybody confirm?
please bring cameras if you have any... can anybody from this board do the headcount? (Jake maybe?) and email me he result @ jordandaud@yahoo.com
thanks a lot.
and c u guys there..

Yes, it's a Mobil station.
Let's see... you're leaving Chantilly at 11:30, that should put you at the Mobil station at about 12:20(assuming you all do the speed limit). I gotta take my daughter to LFCC for driver's ed at 11 but I'll try to catch ya at Mobil if I can make it. If not, ya'll have fun!
well... speed limit on 66 is less expected... dunno how fast we r going this time tho. so.. give your cell phone # to Jake or Eric (if he's coming) so that he can just call you to tell you where to meet, etc.

If your looking to find out what one of DTM's drives is all about check out this video from a recent MD cruise. Nice camera work and editing. Why hasn't any one here (nc.org) done something this good? They have about 2 new videos a month like this. Right click and save as. (43mb not for dial-up) http://www.dvinsight.com/dado/Steve-%20MD%20Drive.mpeg
[edit]-traffic is busy during the day and night. they have a good server but it is best to DL early in the morning or late at night.

Directions to the drive about are in the first post.
according to weather.com, it's gonna rain this saturday. and hitting skyline when it rains, is not really a good idea. if it rains early morning, or late afternoon, then we are okay. But in case it rains around noon, we are plannig on go-karting as a backup plan.
http://www.allsportsgp.com/ <--- info on go-kart
i believe it costs $25/ run of 25 laps including gears, such as helmet and suit. And you have to be 18 & have driver license.
We are hoping it's not gonna rain, since this is gonna be the 4th try going to skyline drive.
So... How many of you are coming? The admission to Skyline Drive is $10. Please bring motorola talkabouts. See you guys at Expo tomorrow..

Thanks to jake and all the DTM guys for the fun. There were a lot of nice looking cars there. Only 1 Celica though.
