View Full Version : 15x6.5" wheel choice now that Race 10s gone

Well, it looks now like Rage has discontinued the Race 10 line of wheels and Discount Tire is telling me they cannot get any at all and probably will not ever get them. Should have ordered for Christmas instead of waiting for the tax return and I wouldn't have been waiting for the last three weeks on wheels I'll never get.

So...based on some talking with Discount Tire and the TireRack I ended up going with the TRMotorsports GK11s from Tirerack, they only weigh 15.5 lbs which isn't great but isn't as bad as the rest of the lineup carried by DiscountTire and TireRack but not as good as the Race 10s. They only cost $99 each and are available in 35mm offset. They'll be here on Tuesday and I have an appointment on Saturday to have the tires mounted and the car aligned to get ready for our first race April 7th.

So they aren't too heavy and they aren't too expensive but they aren't as light or as cheap as the Race 10s used to be.

What other reasonably priced choices are you guys recommending now that the Race 10s apear to be done and no one seemed to have factory take-offs available cheap? It seems after doing lots of talking on the phone that the TRM wheels might be one of the best cheap choices left.

They are as light. The Rage wheels are actually 16 pounds.

I thought the Rage 5.0s were (roughly) the same weight. Also from Discount Tire, also $75. I got a set a month or two ago and weighed them on the bathroom scale, they looked in the 15-16 lb range, though the scale probably has an error of +/- 5 lbs.

I hear you one the Race 10s though, they look better IMHO, and everythying else being equal...

Is that all the rage wheels or just the race 10? I prefer the 5.0s.
Both wheels weight 16# (I own both and weighed them) . The 5.0s are single bolt pattern (makes a BIG difference when trying to change wheels in a hurry) are easier to handle with the wider spacing between spokes, and look less "ricey". They also allow the use of std lug nuts if you don't want to have to deal with tuner lug adapters.

PS: I'd be willing to trade a set of race 10's for 5.0's

Well, the wheels showed up on Saturday. They are much heavier than the Kosei K1s, on my bathroom scale they are showing just short of 16 pounds each. Not quite as ugly as I expected although I don't really care for the deep-dish look. But, they will only be on the car on Sundays and a few Saturdays during the summer so who really cares what they look like.

Discount Tire quoted me a weight of 13.8 pounds for the Race 10s and 16.8 pounds as their next lightest that would fit.

I've got one question, I requested aluminum hub-centric adapters on the advice of some of the locals who think the plastic ones TireRack normally sends are a bad idea. The aluminum ones don't quite fit into the wheel, they are VERY tight. My plastic ones from the Kosei's fit right in. I could pound them into the wheel with a hammer or put them on the car and torque the wheel onto them I think but I'm really worried that is a bad idea. I'll call Monday from work and see what Tirerack has to say but wanted to get your advice. I think if I do pound them in that they will be in for good.

That's NOT a bad thing! I was so tired of having ours stay in the wheel sometimes and on the hub sometimes, I finally glued them to the hubs today. Changing tires is enough work that it p*sses me off when I have to do it twice because I missed the fact the ring stayed with the wheel I took off. Sometimes you have to change tires in a hurry because of weather changes.

Just the Race 10s I believe. I got my 5.0s two months ago, and the Race 10s were not available then.

I bought our last set of 5.0s early Feb, but didn't ask about R10's.
Bought the 10's as our first set of race wheels and 5.0s for street when we first got the GT because all info said the 10s were lighter. The 10's came first so they were mounted with race tires by the time the 5s arrived. I was very disappointed when the weights turned out to be the same.

Boys,
I don't even deal with the plastic hub centric spacers thingy's anymore. To much trouble. If they were street tires I would worry about it. They just help 'make sure' the wheel is in the center when you are tightening the lugs. And if they were on the street you might get vibrations from not quite being perfect in the center... For that matter I don't ballance the wheel/tire either.
