View Full Version : Ac Pump Work As Supercharger?

this guy I know had a hose hooked up to his ac pump on an old bronco and he used it to air his tires up. I was thinking... would an ac pump have enough volume to be used for boost?? ive got a demo derby car that i might try it out on:-)

:moved:

The AC pump would only move a trickle of air compared to a SC. If you used a SC to fill up tires, they would explode rather quickly. ;)

:werd: It's not strong enough to make a difference.

just having the ac on would rod a lot more hp than that idea could ever make. how bout running a duct from the ac vents (cut the housing under the hood)to the airboxfor a super cold air intake.would that work(it probably still would make much power but at least compensate a little in the summer when you running the ac anyway)

You'd probably gain 5hp max by using the cold AC air on a hot day, but the AC system drains 15+hp, so that would be kinda counterproductive. ;)

max gains with an a/c compressor have been determined to be when you rip that heavy a$$ thing out of the car

Thats so damn funny... Brings me back, to when Mikey was designing the SMOG Pump supercharger! I couldnt belive how many HP he had in the Suburban... RIP "bubba"!

RIP? Something I should know about that?

I didn't know bubba was RIP???!!!???

but thats why said in the first post if youre running ac anyway you may be able to reclaim a few horses from having the ac on .10 hp loss instead of 15

The Ford Lightning Concept uses AC to cool incoming air...

2. The coolant temp is BELOW the freezing point!
3. I'm sure that the compressor ISN'T running after the system is charged.
4. 50 hp isn't that much when compared to how much that engine prolly puts out.

What's that engine put out? 400-500 hp?
That's only a 10%-12% gain? 25-30 hp gain at the crank on a celica. Oh and that would be an F/I celica.

1. I didn't bring it up to "compare". Just a FYI.

2. It's a concept. Not a bad one.

3. It will not work well with a NA engine because NA intake air (with CAI) is already near ambient compared to a "heated" air in a FI system. It will also require a intercooler or heat exchanger that most FI systems already have.

Actually, not an AC pump, but if you use an old smog pump off an older car (think late 70's v8 cars) you can use them to supercharge small engines. I've seen a bunch of bikes, go-karts and such that have been supercharged using old smog pumps.

Doubt it'd work on our cars however, not nearly enough boost pressure, and you still need to think about how to handle fuel enrichment.

Smog pumps have become obsolete on modern cars because of all the emissions controls we have in place nowadays, but on older cars, the smog pump was basically an air compressor that was tied into the intake or exhaust side of the engine to pump in air. this helped the exhaust reach the proper temperature for the catalytic convertor to work properly, or leaned the mixture out a bit for the same end result. sort of like EGR on a modern car, only with a pulley-driven compressor pumping clean air instead of exhaust gas pressure being directed back to the intake.

To get it to work on our cars, you would have to run at least two smog pumps, and you would definitely get some parasitic losses, since they're belt-driven off the crankshaft.

if you can get it to work, I give you props, if not, well, at least you tried.

Not sure exactly how it works, but it really screws with aftermarket intakes. :thumbdown

really? So they take a smog pump and use it to FORCE air INTO an engine? That's a new thought for a smog pump. I mean....one that will work. You might be able to S/C your minibike or lawnmower with one, but you'll never make enough power to S/C a decent engine.....come on dude.

Snag the electric AC system from a Prius and hack it into the Celica's wiring, and put a vent into the intake piping. :chuckles: Cool the intake air and yourself off at the same time while losing 0 hp. ;)

I've got your volts baby....whatchu need huh?

I got a better idea...

The engine runs a alternator which in turns use the process of electrolysis to turn the water condensed from the AC and seperate then into a tank of Hydrogen and Oxygen. As you know, hydrogen + pure oxygen = some kind of rocket fuel, you hook it up using nitrous lines and voila, your own enclosed and regenerative NaaWWzZZz system! No more refills. And if you're daring enough, you can hook it up a rocket nozzle hidden in your 6" exhaust pipe... wow that's the ultimate rice rocket!

Probably because of the placement and size of the pump. the pressure drop caused by an aftermarker intake would mess with the air injection; if it's at least putting out 0 bar (or, normal atmospheric pressure)

the soulution would be to relocate the pump's output just after the filter, maybe get it's intake from the filter itself by putting it in-line with the intake... how restrictive is the pump itself? Maybe it needs to flow more than the factory unit...

perhaps they even need to add a second pump to compensate. very interesting...

The patent paperwork isnt submitted yet!!! Dont let this Idea get copied (like everything else) overseas!!!! There are "TICKS AND LEACHES" on the web right now stealing brilliant ideas like these....
