sup guys

Following larryd's big brake install, I was removing the drivers side rear rotor using the "2 screws" technique. One mistake already was I had my parking brake engaged while doing this. So while screwing in the 2 screws, I hear a pop sound. It turns out the 2 screws werent long enuf to get the rotor all the way off, so i put the assembly back together with every bolt torqued to spec (thanx bomber!)

So later as I'm driving, I start to hear a grinding sound. I take it to toyota for my uncle to take a quick look at it; he cant look at it because the toyota there wont work on my car since its so low. Plus, I already know the lift arms will not clear the sideskirts & bend them upwards during the lift.

So today Im actually able get back into the brake assembly & get the rotor off, this time with the parking brake disengaged & blocks in front of the front wheels. It turns out the popping sound came from a metal piece that joins 2 springs that attach to each brake shoe (sorry I dont know the specific term for that metal piece). So, adjusting the little dial at the bottom of the assembly, we bring the the shoes the closest possible & pop the metal piece back onto the "bolt" it popped off of. We do not readjust the dial at the bottom to keep the shoes at the narrowest, put the rotor back on, & spin the rotor to see if there is still scraping: there is.

So we try to remove the rotor again, and this time we do hafta use the 2 screws again & we hear the same popping sound again. The rotor comes off & the same metal piece has popped off again. We tried to put the piece back onto the bolt but then the springs get unattached from the metal piece. It took some effort but we got the springs back onto the metal piece....and the metal piece back onto bolt Tightly this time. All while not adjusting the dial, keeping the shoes at the narrowest. There is still scraping.

We played around with dial adjustment & engaging/disengaging the parking brake and the scraping persisted. Even drove around forward/backward & braking hard (a tip from some mechanic we called), and the scraping is still there.

So the problem: the shoes are scraping drum even with the parking brake disengaged & with the dial set at the narrowest.

Anyone know whats wrong & how to fix it?

THANX in advance

FYI:

the service manual says to expand the dial to the fullest when the rotor is on, then go back 8 clicks. there's also a procedure listed in the service manual to settle the shoes

there's a hole in the rotor to access the dial, right near the lug bolts. it's plugged with a rubber piece

1. drive the car at 30mph on a level road
2. pull on the parking brake lever with 19.8lb-ft of force
3. drive the car for 1/4 mile with the brake pulled up
4. repeat 2-3 times and check the parking lever travel

THANX again Bomber!

Are you sure that the rotor isn't simply hitting the backing plate? A lot of times, when the wheel is removed the backing plate is bumped and it might be hitting the rotor. The E-brake shoes, if they are installed properly should be no where near the drum.

The backing plate is another possibility. I'm going to take a look at it wednesday morning because I'm working tonight & tomorrow night, 12hours.

Im hoping the brake shoe settling trick will do it though.

Sorry Pat but I haven't installed your rotors yet, I'm forreal wanting them installed so I can post some pix up for yor Co.

Edit...

Its not the backing plate cuz when we pulled off the rotor the 2nd time, the parking brake was disengaged & the metal plate was still pulled off. I assume the plate was pulled off cuz the brake shoes were still in contact with the drum. And thas where the sound is coming from.

Problem fixed tonight.

It was part of the backing plate scraping against the rotors in 2 places. Just hadta hammer the 2 places back in towards the inside & all is well now.

Got sipb's rotors in in the rear. Tomorrow is the fronts & painting the calipers. Pix up by tomorrow afternoon

Thanx all
