sup guys
Following larryd's big brake install, I was removing the drivers side rear rotor using the "2 screws" technique. One mistake already was I had my parking brake engaged while doing this. So while screwing in the 2 screws, I hear a pop sound. It turns out the 2 screws werent long enuf to get the rotor all the way off, so i put the assembly back together with every bolt torqued to spec (thanx bomber!)
So later as I'm driving, I start to hear a grinding sound. I take it to toyota for my uncle to take a quick look at it; he cant look at it because the toyota there wont work on my car since its so low. Plus, I already know the lift arms will not clear the sideskirts & bend them upwards during the lift.
So today Im actually able get back into the brake assembly & get the rotor off, this time with the parking brake disengaged & blocks in front of the front wheels. It turns out the popping sound came from a metal piece that joins 2 springs that attach to each brake shoe (sorry I dont know the specific term for that metal piece). So, adjusting the little dial at the bottom of the assembly, we bring the the shoes the closest possible & pop the metal piece back onto the "bolt" it popped off of. We do not readjust the dial at the bottom to keep the shoes at the narrowest, put the rotor back on, & spin the rotor to see if there is still scraping: there is.
So we try to remove the rotor again, and this time we do hafta use the 2 screws again & we hear the same popping sound again. The rotor comes off & the same metal piece has popped off again. We tried to put the piece back onto the bolt but then the springs get unattached from the metal piece. It took some effort but we got the springs back onto the metal piece....and the metal piece back onto bolt Tightly this time. All while not adjusting the dial, keeping the shoes at the narrowest. There is still scraping.
We played around with dial adjustment & engaging/disengaging the parking brake and the scraping persisted. Even drove around forward/backward & braking hard (a tip from some mechanic we called), and the scraping is still there.
So the problem: the shoes are scraping drum even with the parking brake disengaged & with the dial set at the narrowest.
Anyone know whats wrong & how to fix it?
THANX in advance
