Wondering what gas you prefer to fill your tanks with. I take it that high octanes are the norm... is there a brand you like?

dumb california. we got 91 octane as the highest!! Think about how much we're getting screwed. Our highest octane is the lowest rated octane in other 49 states, but priced at $2.25-2.30!

In Indiana we have 87, 89, and either 92 or 93 at every gas station. Sometimes you see 91 or 94 though.
Is Amoco gas bad? I've read that they are supposed to have the best (cleanest) premium fuel in Consumer Reports, I think. I've also heard a couple people say their gas tank went bad because they put BP/Amoco gas in their tank.

if you really care, you could spend some time looking online. each company has different formulations. different additives, like MTBE, produce different results. Each company will tell you what they add and why. if youre into the "pure" fuels (no additives) you can find out who produces those as well. And, if you want to look at it in on another angle, you can find out which company gets its crude from which country, if you dont want your money to go to countries that may try to kill us all later...:bang:

ha...lets see
All the oil comes from the same ground, goes to the same refineries.
Anyone ever driven past a local gasoline storage facility? You ever notice that in the line to to fill the gas trucks is always filled with ALL of the different brands of trucks. Exon/moble, 76, dimond shamrock, etc, etc.....there is no diff. They all fill the trucks at the same storge facilities and then go directly to the gas stations. It's all the same stuff. The only thing you need to worry about is the octane.
Whos every cheaper is where ill be going too. Except for Habeebs Pump and Fill, im sure their tanks are 1/2 full of water before the gas truck fills it the rest of the way full....

I'd have to disagree. True that all oil comes from the ground, but untrue to assume that all the refineries process the fuel in the same way. They try I would imagine, but it doesn't happen. And the additives placed in the fuels differ by brand as well.

Different brands definitely don't have the same gas. Heck, even supposedly the same companies don't have the same gas. I used to be loyal to Mobil and thought that once Exxon and Mobil joined up, that I can go to the new Exxon station nearby until I found out that I get consistently lower gas mileage at that Exxon station. This is what I get:
1. Local Exxon station: ~22-24 mpg
2. Local Mobil station: ~25-27 mpg
3. And the new local BP station: 26-29 mpg
So now I only go to Mobil and BP. I realize that my driving habits can affect gas mileage, but regardless, those are the numbers I get at those stations, and they are consistently those numbers. I can fill up at Exxon 4 or 5 times in a row and never break 24, but as soon as I switch to the Mobil station, I'd never go below 25, even if I drive hard those few days. And finally with BP, I've never had less than 26.

Because when Shell puts their name on the sign it causes the carbon molecules to form together in a different pattern?
Wow a new theory in the basics of chemical physics.

Apparently your knowledge of chemical physics is limited to either textbooks or simply limited. The gasoline that we get at the pump is not the exact same gasoline that is distilled out in an oil refinery. Heptane and octane (molecules) are the major ingredients of gasoline (percentage of gasoline that is comprised of octane = the octane rating).
For a given OCTANE rating, the gasoline for different brands should have roughly the same percentage of octane. HOWEVER, companies add different additives to their gasolines to clean the engines, other internals, increase fuel efficiency (by adding oxygenates such as MTBE), and reduce carbon monoxide emissions.
From the American Petroleum Institute:
"...some cars may operate better on premium because of additives. Additives, which are found in all gasolines, keep engines clean and make them run more efficiently. Some brands have more effective additives and some use bigger doses in their premium grades."
Additives such as MTBE and ethanol are used most often, but since MTBE is a carcinogen, the non-carcinogetic ethanol will replace it. Additives increase the price of gasoline, so some companies don't use as much of them. As a result, it is very possible that you can be buying cheaper gas that reduces gas mileage, which in turn makes it more expensive than higher quality gas. A better standard would probably take into account BOTH $/gallon AND $/mile.
It is also important to note that having an octane rating ABOVE what's required for your engine does not increase horsepower or fuel efficiency; that is, if no additives are considered, buying 93 versus 89 does not give you more horsepower if your car only requires 89.
There's a misconception that it's the adding of octane that boosts horsepower, when it's in fact the extra additives that comes with the higher-octane fuels that (may) increase power (as a result of a better burn) and fuel efficiency. Therefore, for those complaining of only getting 91 octane in California as opposed to 93 in most of the rest of the country, 93 does NOT give you better gas. 91 octanes are formulated by each gas company to be just as good performance-wise as their 93 because 91 is the next step up from 89, just like 93 is, except that each region/state dictates what's next up from 89. All in all, 91 is not worse than 93, but both are better than 89 in that they have more/better additives.

I will only use V-Power now.
