Ok,
just got a new Celica (ZR here in Aust, GTS in US).
Our user manual states a run in distance of 1000km (600 miles.)
I notice the FAQ here recommends 1000 miles, wow.
I didn't make the 600 mile mark.
The yesterday after doing around 400 miles I couldn't wait any more. After warming the car under 4000rpm, I did a couple of runs changing at 5500rpm, 75% throttle. then a couple changing at 7500 and 90% throttle, just to feel the second cam come on. I did this for both 2nd and third gear, so up to around 70mph.
So, what is the chance of damage doing this once or twice?
What sort of damage could I do?
How would it show?
Thanks,
Mamba...

Don't worry about it. Although you shouldn't, once or twice is not going to hurt anything. If this were really a concern, the dealership wouldn't let people test drive new cars.
I know I beat the crap out of the car on the test drive... but then told them I wanted it in a different color. :D

eh.... my car had 30 miles on it when i got it, which means it was test droven before. i dont know what happened in each of these 30 miles, but rite now my car has some *minor* problems, and i dunno what to think of it.... perhaps it was me, or perhaps it was the first 30 miles..... the salesmen asked me if i wanted to take it on the freeway and i was like uh.... WTF (in my mind) they are encouraging you to disregard the owners manual break in period? iono...
btw.... just try not to do too much of it. there's plenty of time to get ur ECU to adjust to ur driving AFTER break-in period.... (i think ECU does it, or was i misled......) anyways yea

Yeah, this has been discussed plenty of times. I drove my car hard from the start and it runs perfect. I remember someone saying that they test the cars at the factory for 500 miles.

I know that Porsche runs their engines through the first oil change at the factory but I'm not sure about the rest of the car. I doubt Toyota would do this on a $20k car.

dont' worry bout ti man
some people say redlining it a few times during the break in can actually help the car.

The dealer told me that you just don't want to leave the engine at the same RPM for too long durring the break in period. Bascially he said, don't take a brand new car on a long road trip down the freeway were you'll be doning a constant speed for hours on end. You probably want to drive it nicely for at least the first few hundered miles as well.

Just remember to do your first oil change after the break-in period. Even though it isn't scheduled on your maintenance schedule you should do it because there might be some contaminants in the engine left over from the factory.

Is it bad to mod your car during the break in period? I want to hurry up and add in the exhaust and such but this break in perioud thing is taking too long.

No it's not bad at all. A better flow exhaust is good for your car. It's the way you drive it. That's the issue.
I had my exhaust and cai installed before I reached 1k mi.

I gave my car 1000 miles of break in period, but during that time I punch the gas a few times.
