a law was just passed in my town that says you cant have anything that emmits sound over 20 db. i guess its mostly for people that drive on the beach with loud music. looks like i wont have my kazuma exhaust for long... can anyone give me an example of what 20 db is? isnt that like a lawn mower?!

I think 20 db is louder than a mower.

I thought 35db was the lower limit of human hearing?

A top of the line Mercedes has background cabin noise of about 57 dB at IDLE. 20dB isn't even going to be perceptible by the human ear.

Better re-read that law. I fart louder than 20dB, will I get arrested for breaking wind in a public place?

Autxr is right.

30-35db is about the sound that your computer fan makes

brandon, I believe thats 35hz (frequency response), not db.

Google search owns... somehow i think the law is stated wrong

Threshold of Hearing (TOH) 0db
Rustling Leaves 10db
Whisper 20db
Normal Conversation 60db
Busy Street Traffic 70db
Vacuum Cleaner 80db
Large Orchestra 98dB
Walkman at Maximum Level 100db
Front Rows of Rock Concert 110db
Threshold of Pain 130db
Military Jet Takeoff 140db
Instant Perforation of Eardrum 160db

IT may be 20dB from a certain distance.... Still I hate laws like this coz you really can't justify the Sound Level unless you have baddass hearing or you can pull a VU Meter out of your A$$...
Get in your Celica W/ everything off and windows up turn you AC fan on to the 2nd notch from drivers position that's 20 dB..... 80-85dB is the nominal listening level for anytype of music.

Damn, if thats the law, I guess I'm gona have to move!! This is pulled right from the Fl State Statutes.

316.3045 Operation of radios or other mechanical soundmaking devices or instruments in vehicles; exemptions.--

(1) It is unlawful for any person operating or occupying a motor vehicle on a street or highway to operate or amplify the sound produced by a radio, tape player, or other mechanical soundmaking device or instrument from within the motor vehicle so that the sound is:

(a) Plainly audible at a distance of 100 feet or more from the motor vehicle; or

(b) Louder than necessary for the convenient hearing by persons inside the vehicle in areas adjoining churches, schools, or hospitals.

(2) The provisions of this section shall not apply to any law enforcement motor vehicle equipped with any communication device necessary in the performance of law enforcement duties or to any emergency vehicle equipped with any communication device necessary in the performance of any emergency procedures.

(3) The provisions of this section do not apply to motor vehicles used for business or political purposes, which in the normal course of conducting such business use soundmaking devices. The provisions of this subsection shall not be deemed to prevent local authorities, with respect to streets and highways under their jurisdiction and within the reasonable exercise of the police power, from regulating the time and manner in which such business may be operated.

(4) The provisions of this section do not apply to the noise made by a horn or other warning device required or permitted by s. 316.271. The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles shall promulgate rules defining "plainly audible" and establish standards regarding how sound should be measured by law enforcement personnel who enforce the provisions of this section.

(5) A violation of this section is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a nonmoving violation as provided in chapter 318.

Actually that law isn't uncommon, and in my mind is a good one.

I never asked to hear some punk kids rap music as they drive by my house, and they sure as hell never asked me if I wanted to hear it. More power to the cops if they make the folks turn the car stereos down!

The rule is pretty specific, plainly audible at 100 feet, if I can hear it clearly at 100 feet, I bet it's safe to assume you can hear it at 2 feet, turn it down!

Yeah, I agree with you! There is nothing more I hate than pulling up to a stop light and hearing the guys radio that is behind me way louder than mine!

I would be curious as to how loud the kazuma is? 100db? I have a Cat Back straight Pipe that is loud when thrashed. The other night in Boston, I was cruising the "concrete canyon" and had to hole shot a light to go from the right lane over 2 lanes to the left lane to turn left at the next light. I didn't know there was a cop behind me and he pulled up next to me with his window down and gave me a: "WTF was that!" kinda look.

I think he got a earful of the straight pipe echoing of all the high rises and it was deafening! Love that STR8 Pipe!

Light turned green, I crawled left and didn't look back!

my favorite thing to do at a stop light is to time how long it takes someone to roll up there window. i'll kept i quite then slowly turn it up. so far my record is 3 seconds. i just laugh and turn it down and wait till they roll it down again.

At least its only for Ponce Inlet. You can't do anything there.

You realize of course that the law is directed at stationary property both residential and commercial and makes no mention of cars.

autxr

It would make it illegal to mow your yard, or even start the car in the driveway. That law would be thrown out so quickly if anyone really wanted to fight it.

The big thing is the selective enforcement. It's basically a nuisance law, if they don't like you they can get you.

Trust me guys, almost every state has a law like that. Does that mean it is going to be enforced? No. In the words of Bubba Sparxxx..."they can't arrest us all."

ha. you are talking about the town that stops people for going 2mph over the speed limit. its a little town right outside of daytona beach, 4 miles long. the cops have nothing better to do than pull people over for little things like that. ive been pulled over countless times for underbody neons and stereo too loud. btw, the law is for cars, the law was mainly passed cause of cars driving on the beach with loud music. they stand 100 ft. from the car with the db meter.

Not doubting you but the article that you posted specifically said property with the noise being measured from the property line??
