View Full Version : Belt Tensioner?

I have a squeeking or squeeling sound coming form the car on cold, humid days. It fluctuates with engine speed. Would this be the belt tensioner?
I have a 2000 GT-S with about 7,100 miles on it. Would this be something that's covered under warranty?

I have the same problem, I live in Pa, and lately it's been pretty bad. I got myself a can of belt dressing and conditioner, and sprayed the hell out of the belt. It seemed to have solved the problem, but sometimes it still does it. Either way it did help. Wish I could help more, but it's a temp fix if nothing else.

I have 2000 GTS with 14,000 miles and got my belt tensioner replaced at about 12,000 miles. Warrenty covered the entire replacement including labor. My toyota dealership said they've had to replace the tensioner on other celicas, with the same squeaking noise.

Yes. Actually, I got my toyota serviced today, and told them that I heard an occasionaly squeeky noise on humid or rainy days. I took a look myself, and I saw that POS bouncing within the pulley guards! Well, they couldn't replicate it, but the told me that they were going to do it since they said it was a problem with 00-01 cars. I have a 01 GT. So that's good. But it will have to stay overnight. :( Hope the new belt will not flap around like that!

i just had mine replaced also when i took the car in to get an oil change.. they changed it under warranty with no problems but they told me that this was the first time theyve ever heard of this problem.. i dont know if i beleive that though.. either way.. no squeaking..
At about 25k miles, there was a rattling sound coming from my engine. It was like a small diesel engine was in there. At the 30k service the mechanic told me it was the belt tensioner. The car never made a squeaking noise, but after the service it was back to normal. They replaced the belt, the tensioner and its pully, which apparently had rattled itself out of shape.
Thought I'd share so people will know about another symptom of the bad belt tensioner problem.

Yeah. Got my car back the other day. It runs fine now. Even though it only made noises when it was rainy or humid. Doesn't matter. Got the Tensioner, pulley, and belt replaced. Yay.. Now I can drive with a little bit more confidence

Yeah I had the same problem when I got to about 15,000 miles. I just took it into the dealership and it was replaced.

I've had mine replaced 3 times. The 3rd one was replaced about a week ago. Guess what? The damn thing is squealing again. One thing i noticed, is that a common thing all of us have had happen is, that everybody needs their tensioner replaced every 10-15,000 miles. GT-S and GT's alike. I have 35,700 or so miles on my car. The tensioners have been replaced at 12,000 or so mile intervals. And yes, the last two were with the TSB units.(Belts as well) This is B.S.

Man, if I need a new one every 7,000 something miles...
I wish I could replicate the darned thing, but it looks like it's going to stay warm in this part of Texas for a long time now. Maybe it'll start to do it in warmer weather now.
Good to know that a few people got it replaced even when it wasn't cool enough to get the thing to make noise at least. It gives me a little hope.

They didnt try to schedule one in the early morning? My dealer scheduled me at 8am so that it would be squealing (i told them it was a morning thing) and sure enough it was. They replaced the tensioner and the belt. After all the horror stories on the board it kinda felt good to answer the guys "Have you modified the car at all?" with a resounding "NO!!!".................for now :D

I built us a New Celica Issue System.
Check it out. Completly database driven, and very simple to use. Once we get enough in there I'll enable the ability to get reports and ALL records for certain categories. Then you can reports on Belts, Engines, Dealership Issues. Its all there!
Check it out.
