I am trying to find the best place to buy a pfc. Does anyone have any recommendations? Also, am I risking anything by installing this unit? MWR said that it comes with a map that would be sufficient until I dyno tune it. Does anyone have any experience with it/ horror stories?

There is a seller in ebay with name www_jappartsspecialist_com
They are located in Japan but they will send it through EMS shipping which arrived to me in California within 3 days (when they have the PFC on hand). Might want to email them first and check stock before you buy.
BUT IT DOES NOT COME WITH MAP!!
MWR one comes with map tuned to U.S. fuel so it would be better, so pay alittle extra with MWR which save you some time when dynoing the car.

How hard is it to map a PFC? Say I did purchase one with maps? What is required?

First to load the map you need a Datalogit box to load the map to the PFC, so that is investment of $300~$350 for a datalogit.
Second after loading the map you would still need to retune that map to your car specifically, so another $100~$300 dyno time (not sure how experienced your dyno guy is).
This is what I recommand:
If you are experienced with standalone and tuning, go ahead and get PFC + datalogit + wideband O2.
If you are not then just get the tunned map from MWR, drive slowly to a dyno shop (Apexi authorized tuner with Power Excel software?) and get it dyno tunned to your car.

Sorta related question:
Is it possible to use the PFC like a piggyback -- that is, to have it work in conjunction with the stock ECU, but only have it override a few specific settings, rather than run the whole engine?

No its not possible...the PFC is a complete replacement...what else would you want it to run besides the engine..thats the whole point of it...

Best place I would look for one would be the For Sale Forum in this board first, if no luck then try any of the sponsored sites.
