I bought the meguire gold class wax and in it included the yellow foam pad.
Will this pad cause scratches since it's not cotton?
are the terry cloth pads better?

Foam is good as long as it is clean. The thing about foam is that it will not pick up dirt, it will leave it on the surface and drag it along your paint. I use foam pads on my car all the time and they dont scratch. Just keep it clean and you will be ok.

If this is the case, why don't people use foam to wash the car?
i thought that anything other than 100%cotton put scratches on the car.

fastracer, dirt is what scratches a car, not the material that you are rubbing against the surface, but the dirt itself.
Probably the most perferred method for washing a car is with one of thoes was mits because they pull a lot of dirt up in them and keeps it away from the part of the mit that you are rubbing against your car.
Foam doesnt trap as much dirt. If there is dirt on the surface of you car and you rub a foam pad across it, it will wipe the dirt across your paint. But if there is dirt on the surface of your car and you wipe a terry towel across it, the dirt will go up into the terry loop and not touch your car.

just make sure you soak the foam pad with water first before you use it. it'll help out when you first start applying wax until the sponge itself starts to sock up the wax inside. and i always wash the sponge afterwards.
