Is it possible for a small mouse to make his way into the heating ducts in our car? I heard some strange scratching sounds coming from the defrosting vents. I have also noticed a strange smell from time to time. What do you guys think?

i had that happen in my house......a rat made a nest in out luandry duct with the lint, and dies in there.........smelled so so so sick. youd know if something was dead, you wouldnt be able to to in your car, you would immediatly vomit especially if its comtained like that...........we had to keep the laundry room door closed with towels shoved under the door so the smell wouldnt seep into the house............until some one came to dispose of the rat, and its nest

That's sucks! A rat, huh - gross.
My brother had a mouse build a nest next to the heating element in his Grand Am and when he turned on his heater it blew a sick smelling smoke out. I guess it was burning the nest, which he found when he dug around in there.
I'm just not sure if there is a way for a mouse to get into that area in our car though. I hope it was someting else.

WRATH, it would be a peice of cake for a mouse to get into the ducts of your car. If you look under the dash on the passenger side you will see the blower moter that blows air through the ducts. There is a ton of open spaces in there that a rodent could use to get in there.
I have a friend who has a bad rodent problem with his car. He lives out in the middle of the country with dirt roads around him for miles. His car is always parket outside on a gravel drive way and he will periodically get mice in his car. I don't know how the heck they get in there, but they do. He thinks that they crawl around inside the engine bay and sometimes find their way in through one of the holes in the fire wall that wire/cables go through.
My friend just keeps the inside of his car really clean and insists that the mice will find their way out when they realize there is no food for them inside the car. I would suggest, however, that you do whatever you can to get rid of this pest as quickley as possable. I don't know exactly what you need to do, but calling an exterminator would probably be a step in the right direction. The reason I would take this seriously isn't because I think that mice are creepy, or dirty(even though they are), but rather because of the potential damage it could do to your car. Think of the problems a mouse could cause if it decided to nible on your electrical system behind your dash. It would be quite costly to have to remove the interior and replace the wireing harness because a rodent chewed through a bunch of the wires.

please don't disturb them !! They're probably working hard preserving their genes in there and find our cars a comfy place to do that .......

haha I had a teacher who told us about a 240 Z that she had she normally had it stored in her garage becuase she and her husband didn't want to drive it well they decided to sell it and some one came to take a test drive loved the car but when they test drove it, it broke down, they didn't understand it, what happend was a squirel decided that it could hide acorns in the air intake so when they pulled the air filter off they found it to be filled with acorns, Just thought I would share.

To keep a mouse out of your ducts, just set your vent to inside air instead of fresh when you park. This is how they get in, when the fresh air vent is open they can get right in there. They usually end up in the blower wheel (fan). You wouldn't believe how many of these our service dept. sees every year.

My dad had a 1988 Chevy Cavalier wagon which was garaged in New Hampshire for about a year. He said I could have it if I just flew out and got it, which I did. The heater didn't smell like a dead mouse it just smelled....funny. It turned out ti be insulation from the garage that a mouse had used to make the heating ducts it's home. Nothing a shop vac didn't take care of. >:)
