Do you guys drive around town in 3rd(overdrive off) or in 3rd with sportronic since 4th gear doesn't have much power? Is it bad for the engine if you do or do you just have worse gas mileage?

i go to 4th whenever i can. if you drive the car you will know. im guessing youve never driven one before cause you prolly wouldnt be asking that.

i own one. It just sounds better in 3rd with trd exhaust and has more power in 3rd in sportronic, but in regular auto with O/D off it seems to accelerate better. i just want to know if you guys ever drive in 3rd while you're cruising the streets?

It's not going to hurt anything except for your gas mileage, and more reving on the engine... It'd be pretty stupid to drive around in 3rd.. when you have a 4th gear that you can sit in and keep your revs down.. if you want to impress someone on the streets just hit the gas and have it downshift and you'll get nice sound out of the exhaust.

I have an auto-gts (worst decision i made with the car), but hey i gotta deal with it.

We all should have gone with a 6speed.

I don't think autos are that bad. Where I live in Orlando, the traffic is real bad going anywhere at the times of day I drive, so I don't think a 5 speed would have been a good idea for me.

Drive in 4th.....less strain on trans and better mileage...

BTW: no flaming intended, but.....I keep seeing over and over and over all these guys with the auto GT-S that say "I wish I would've gone with the 6-speed", "worst purchase ever", "my auto GT-S sucks".....my question is: Then why did you buy the auto GT-S? If it sucks SOOOOO bad, and its's the worst purchase ever.....then WHY?

Again no flaming intended, but the 6-speed was available along with the auto, and when I bought my car there were 6-speeds there and I did not buy one because I wanted an auto and I knew the automatic will suck compared with the 6-speed. Do I bitch about it......nah, I joke about it, but I love my car.

I just would like to see a straight answer from someone who has the auto, but wanted the 6-speed, that's all, not instigating.

i agree. I have the auto and i don't regret not buying a 6speed. I've driven stick like two times just learning. I like the ease of automatics. yes the 6speed is faster but i don't go to the track and it's dangerous to street race so i enjoy my auto and sportshift buttons. It's unique. I get compliments on it all the time. People never say "man your car sucks b/c it's not a stick". I love the looks of the car. I'd rather have something that looks really good and not as fast than having a fast as hell car but is but ugly. Be proud of what you own is all i have to say.

Same here, my parents won't me trade it in even though i pay for it.

Yes yes, but the celica still looks tight. people can't look into the tranny.

I think its a case of these people not having been performance-oriented before they got the car, then getting themselfs heavily into performance afterwards and regretting the decision.

doesn't make that much of a difference on the tranny. it's just keeping it in a lower gear.

of course if you drove around ALL THE TIME (like for hundreds and hundreds of miles) in 3rd gear, that's like driving in only 5th on a 6-speed, so you'll get horrible gas mileage and then start to put strain in the form of heat through your tranny fluid.

no because you are a horsepower maniac....you still have an auto.....just with much, much more power....

oo_snoopy: if you bought YOUR car and you pay for YOUR car, how come you cannot make a decision about YOUR car. Are they afraid that you will damage the car or go out racing? Just thinking cuz I have been in the same situation and I have been able to make my decisions about my car.

"I think its a case of these people not having been performance-oriented before they got the car, then getting themselfs heavily into performance afterwards and regretting the decision."

Thats my reason exactly. When i bought the celica, my mom and i picked it out to share, she didn't want a manual, and i knew nothing about the car or cars at age 15 1/2. All i knew is it had this nifty lil sport shift so i said go with that. Once i got the car i wanted to mod it and realized that the 6-speed would have been a lot better choice. I still love my car and wont trade it in or sell it, just says it was a bad decision because 6-speed would have been a lot better.

XYRCNCP: my dad workes on trucks and reefers so he thinks he knows it all. I also get the reason, you live under my roof so you do what i say, and your not trading in you car!. Heck one time when i was bugging them they told me they were gonna trade in my car for a 5 speed caviler. I would have done it until they told me no mods. When i finish high school, i'm gone.

u summed that up perfectly... i didnt realize it till after i bought the car.. im still happy with it.. and ill still mod and take it to the track.. but its just one of those.. "if i could do it over again" type things..

same with me....but my next car wont be a celica. I'm so into performance (dont even care about looks anymore) that I might as well get one of the best used cars possible. I'm almost 24 and I have another 5-6 years to be cool.

exactly.. mine wont be either... this summer i plan to dedicate my modding to the celica.. then next summer i plan on getting a 95 eclipse gs-t or gsx... no bodykit.. nothing to the looks of it besides regular cleaning.. but under the hood??.. thatll be another story.. lol

??????????

People can look at your shifter and see D instead of 1-2-3-4-5-6 - dont' think they don't do it.
