Hey guys,

Sorry I know this isn't the forum for the TSB, but since a lot of ppl need this and no one really checks the TSB forum that often, I thought it'd be a good thing to post it here. I just had my tensioner replaced last week but still had the noise. I went to Toyota today to have the belt itself replaced, too. Apparently, Toyota replaces the tensioner and then checks to see if the belt is needed later on. I don't know how to post a pic here, so I guess I'll email this to Larry and have him post it here later.

hey if your car is out of warranty does the belt tensioner tsb still apply???

There is no TSB on the belt tensioner for our cars. There is a TSB for the Corolla which has the same engine and same tensioner problem.

A TSB is not a recall. This does not mean you can just take your car in and get it fixed. All a TSB does is give specific installation information to the dealers so they don't have to run around getting part numbers and installation instuctions. It saves the dealers, hence Toyota, time and money.

The tensioner is covered only by the 3/36k warranty....not the powertrain. I just went thru all of this with my dealer.

If you need to change you tensioner out of warranty, get a hold of David Draper, he can set you up with the parts you need.

Wait, wait, wait....I used to think that there was no TSB on the tensioner, but I really got a copy today. Where's Larry with the scan? I can give you some numbers. Although it's true that it's not like a recall.

Woulda thought that Dave Draper would have been all over this. Oh well. But anyways, CloneGTS, check again. I don't know why I seem to be the only one who got a copy of this. This TSB was listed December 7, 2001. I hope Larry can post the scan soon, just so you guys will believe me. Or more importantly, refer to it for the dealer.

my car is new , 1600km so far , everytimes when i take my foot off the gas (speed: over 80km/hr), high pitched sound comes out!
i told the dealer abt it , they checked up my car, they told me that i have to replace a new transmission , wtf ??!!
just want to make sure where/why those sound occurred.

My car makes a rattling sound when I am accelerating. It happenes at about 3000 rpm's and happens more when I am moving. When I am standing still it does not make as much noise.

Wow...numbers and all. That's tight man. I apologize. My dealer must be in the stone age or something. I was just arguing with them about the tensioner stuff a few weeks ago and the only one they could come up with was the Corolla. They used it to show me the same 3/36 warranty is the only one that applies.

Belt squeaking is usually the first sign of the tensioner going bad. You know it's getting really bad when you hear the rock tumbler sound. You can only hear it from inside the car. It sounds like it's coming from the dash, right behind the clock. After a while, I could hear the rock tumbler sound even while driving it got so loud.

I figured David would be all over that too. We did however figure out that you can replace just the tensioner itself (not the whole arm) on all models up until the whole assembly is one piece, which I think took place in 2001 sometime.

Hey, the rock tumbling sound is from the tensioner?? I had that same noise and had it checked once by Toyota and they said that it was caused by my aftermarket radio's loose wires (they WERE loose) hitting the metal beam behind the dash. I couldn't really say much about it, so I had to pay $30 for labor. Oh well, can't prove anything now...

Yeah, my dealership is still fumbling through a replacement. He has the tensioner now, but realized after the had my car for two days that they need a belt, too. So the belt for the new tensioner is on national backorder. He's getting me a belt from southern Wisconsin, but I have to bring the car back AGAIN tomorrow. And this after I tried to make sure they had all the parts BEFORE I dropped off the car. Idiots...

Haha...I had the same problem. I've been to a Toyota dealer a total of 6 times now for this problem. First was a waste cuz the noise couldn't be duplicated. 2nd time I went to a different dealer and still couldn't duplicate it. 3rd time I proved the noise. 4th time I went in for the replacement and they called me 4hrs later and tell me that they had 2 tensioners, but 1 was broken and 1 was for the GT. Pissed me off. 5th time I had the tensioner replaced. Same noise after, so the 6th time they replaced the belt. Stupid service!!

Oh, whoever wants the scan, email me at Lomeinhu@Yahoo.com. I'll forward it to you. Please put: "TSB request" as your subject, or I'll treat it as junk mail/ virus mail and delete it. Please don't post here.

i dunno what's wrong with the dealerships i goto, but I've had the tension replaced about 4-5 times now and the problem still cames back after a couple weeks/months. Now the dealership says it's due to my AEM intake, but that seems very unlikely. I doubt Toyota builds to tollerances so that an extra 5hp would cause the belt system to self destruct.... but that's what the dealer tried to convince me of. Maybe they lie and don't really replace the part heh.

Dawgg, I got the same reply when I brought my car in and it was actually making the sound the day I brought it in. "That's due to your Advanced Air Intake System" or "That's just daily driving sounds". However, when I brought it in and it wasn't making the sound to badly, they claimed to replace the belt. I don't think they ever did it cuz the sound always comes back.

I know I've told you not to post your requests here, but I just wanna know if those of you who received the scan of the TSB by email actually received it and can read the file. Just a check up. Oh, and also, this is a TTT for those who haven't seen this post yet.

Wow, lots of requests...due to the increased number of people asking for the TSB, I will require that you send $5 to me (lomeinhu@yahoo.com) before I send you the TSB. You can check my feedback on eBay. All positives. Buy with confidence!

Does the part where it says "Applicable Warranty" mean that it will only be repaired under warranty if you're under 36mo/36k, or that the new tensioner has a 36mo/36k warranty on it? Hopefully it's the latter, since I'm at almost 45k, and have been waiting for an upgraded tensioner to come out before I go to get it replaced (if I'm gonna waste time at the dealership getting it fixed, it better be done right the first time :) ).

you know you've got problems when you're all excited over a scan of a service bulletin. :(

Blue,

Don't quote me on this, but each time a service is performed, the parts replaced and the labor done are warrantied for another 36mo or 36,000 miles from the time of the service.

Read the bottom of the TSB that I typed up (see above).

haha, thanks GTSLaid, it takes the load off my shoulders. Oh, and thanks for giving me credit (although my contribution seems so insignificant compared to the work you've done) :D

Oh, as a side question: I had my tensioner and belt replaced, and so far so good. But i still get the little ratting sound behind the dash. Does this mean the tensioner's gonna fail soon?

is it coming from the same place... it could be a loose plastic cover.. did you make sure all the plastics are riveted down.. cause the vibration sounds can get pretty annoying.. other than that make sure the seat of your battery (the white plastic piece) is in place the right way...
