I don't think a dual exhaust will lose power by virtue of it being a dual exhaust. It might lose power because it is a poor design, or because you bought garbage mufflers, but I for one wouldn't worry about it losing power because of its' dual nature.

Of course, the single exhausts on the market have been designed and tested (hopefully ;)) to make more power than stock, but to my knowledge, no one builds a a carefully designed and tested dual exhaust, so your stuck trying a custom job on your own.

Here is a link to the only manufactured dual I've seen: http://www.gtautosports.com/celapost.htm
I believe it cost $485(???) If you are interested it can be searched out. They have a site of their own.

Of course, you would be doing this because you know that it can be a good way to achieve hp w/ less noise than a single exhaust, not just for looks, right!? Anyways, I just wanted to say that I e mailed postert "design and wheels" to see if the pipe actually does anything... I 'll tell ya if they write back. It looks as though thier system is only a two tip design, with one muffler. One thing to think about is dual set-ups are really heavy. I agree that perhaps the best way to go is a competent tuning shop with a full headers-back tuned sytem for your final-mod setup. Even then, expect some trial and error (read$$). If you do it maybe we could get 4 or 5 members together for identical systems, off-setting R&D and dyno costs. Again, unless you just want something that looks good. The good news is that "good 'ole boy" shops can actually do things the aftermarket can't, and often risk $5000 fines to do so.
