I can't believe what I'm reading here about the timing belt tensioners! I'm about to unload my 98 Prelude because it has suffered the same broblem.....twice! Both times after the same lousy 36K warranty ran out, too. I was really considering a Celica up until this point but I don't want to go thru this nightmare again. Is this a problem with the early Celicas only?
Do I have to buy an SE-R or VR6 instead.

Whatever you do. Too many electrical problems, my familly had one.

I don't know what you read, but we don't have any problem with our timing belt tensioners. For that matter the GT-S doesn't even have a timing belt. It's a timing chain. The tensioner that's squeaking is the alternator one. Hope that clears some things up.
